Claims
- 1. In a method of synthesizing a crystalline aluminosilicate ZSM-5 zeolite from a reaction mixture comprising water, sources of silicate, alumina and alkali metal, the improvement whereby the zeolite is synthesized in a reaction mixture consisting essentially of said sources and a member selected from the group consisting of (1) ZSM-5 seeds, (2) mixtures of ZSM-5 seeds with alcohol, (3) mixtures of ZSM-5 seeds with alcohol and ammonium hydroxide, and (4) mixtures of ZSM-5 seeds with ammonium hydroxide to yield a zeolite ZSM-5 product containing no more than about 0.2% by weight of organic nitrogen.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said alcohol is an alkanol containing 2 to 5 carbon atoms.
- 3. The method of claim 2 wherein said alkanol is ethanol.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein said member is ZSM-5 zeolite seeds.
- 5. The method of claim 4 wherein said seeds are from the residue of a previously-prepared batch of ZSM-5 zeolite.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein said member is a mixture of alcohol and ZSM-5 zeolite seeds.
- 7. The method of claim 6 wherein the alcohol is ethanol.
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein said member is a mixture of ammonium hydroxide, ZSM-5 zeolite seeds and an alkanol.
- 9. The method of claim 8 wherein the alkanol is ethanol.
- 10. The method of claim 1 wherein the seeds are present in an amount of from about 0.01 to about 10% by weight of final product zeolite ZSM-5.
- 11. The method of claim 1 wherein the aluminosilicate is synthesized in the presence of ZSM-5 seeds and ammonium hydroxide.
- 12. Process for preparing a synthetic crystalline zeolite molecular sieve having the chemical composition and X-ray powder diffraction pattern of zeolite ZSM-5, which comprises forming an aqueous reaction mixture consisting essentially of inorganic reagents including ZSM-5 seeds and having the following compositions in terms of mole ratios of oxides:
- SiO.sub.2 /Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 :5-100
- OH.sup.- /SiO.sub.2 :0.07-1.0
- H.sub.2 O/OH.sup.- :10-300
- NH.sub.4 OH/Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 :0-250
- and maintaining said reaction mixture at a temperature of from 75.degree. C. to 175.degree. C. for a period of six hours to 60 days until crystals of the zeolite are formed.
