Claims
- 1. A method for protection of heart or heart tissue from damage caused by metabolic and ionic abnormalities developed during, following or associated with ischemia, comprising administering to a subject in need thereof an effective amount of a compound which is an inhibitor of a sodium-potassium-chloride cotransporter.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the compound is selected from the group consisting of furosemide, piretanide, benzmetanide, bumetanide and torasemide.
- 3. The method of claim 2 wherein the metabolic and ionic abnormalities are caused by zero-flow ischemia.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein the compound is administered after zero-flow ischemia.
- 5. The method of claim 3 wherein the compound is administered before zero-flow ischemia as a cardioprotection.
- 6. The method of claim 2 wherein the metabolic and ionic abnormalities are caused by low-flow ischemia.
- 7. The method of claim 2 wherein the compound is administered after low-flow ischemia.
- 8. The method of claim 6 wherein the compound is administered before low-flow ischemia as a cardioprotection.
- 9. A method for cardioprotection against development of metabolic and ionic abnormalities during, following or associated with ischemia causing damage of the heart or heart tissue said method comprising steps:
- (a) identifying a subject at risk of suffering ischemic insult; and
- (b) administering to said subject at risk of ischemia a therapeutically cardioprotective amount of a compound which is an inhibitor os sodium-potassium-chloride cotransporter, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or ester thereof.
- 10. The method of claim 9 additionally comprising step (c) administering to a subject having suffered from ischemic insult a therapeutic amount of the compound which is the inhibitor of sodium-potassium-chloride cotransporter, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or ester thereof after an ischemic insult.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein the compound is selected from the group consisting of furosemide, piretanide, benzmetanide, bumetanide and torasemide.
