Claims
- 1. A method of treating waste comprising:
- a. providing first and second containment vessels;
- b. conducting liquid-borne waste to the first vessel for biological treatment, the liquid-borne waste including inert solids, the treatment including contact with biological solids;
- c. conducting the biologically treated waste from the first vessel to the second vessel for clarification and settling; and
- d. continuously recirculating the settled biologically treated waste from the second vessel to the first vessel, and removing during recirculation suspended inert solids without significant removal of biological solids larger in size than at least some of the inert removed solids.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein substantially all inert solids larger in size than 1 .mu.m and substantially all biological solids larger than 250 .mu.m are removed during recirculation, thereby allowing biological solids smaller than 250 .mu.m to re-enter the first vessel.
- 3. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of filtering untreated, liquid-borne waste before it reaches the first vessel to remove particles having a minimum size of 6 mm.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the first and second containment vessels each have an upper region and a lower region, and further wherein material is continuously recirculated from the lower region of the second vessel to the first vessel.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the recirculation step comprises conducting the recirculating material through a centrifugal separation means and a screen.
- 6. The method of claim 5 wherein the screen has an opening size between 50 and 500 .mu.m.
- 7. The method of claim 6 wherein the opening size is 250 .mu.m.
- 8. The method of claim 5 wherein the centrifugal separation means removes particles having sizes ranging from 1-250 .mu.m and specific gravities in excess of 1.5.
- 9. The method of claim 8 wherein the centrifugal separation means is a hydrocyclone having a peak removal efficiency for particles having minimum sizes ranging from 50-60 .mu.m and specific gravities of about 2.6.
- 10. A method of treating waste comprising:
- a. providing a treatment vessel;
- b. conducting liquid-borne waste to the treatment vessel for biological treatment comprising contact with biological solids, the liquid-borne waste including inert solids;
- c. facilitating outflow of the biologically treated waste from the treatment vessel; and
- d. continuously recirculating the biologically treated waste through a recirculation loop and back to the treatment vessel, and removing during recirculation suspended inert solids without significant removal of biological solids larger in size than at least some of the inert removed solids.
- 11. A method of treating waste comprising:
- a. providing first and second containment vessels each having upper and lower regions;
- b. conducting liquid-borne waste to the first vessel for biological treatment, the liquid-borne waste comprising inert solids, the treatment including contact with biological solids;
- c. conducting the biologically treated waste from the first vessel to the second vessel for clarification and settling;
- d. continuously recirculating the settled biologically treated waste from the second vessel to the first vessel; and
- e. processing the recirculated settled biologically treated waste to remove therefrom substantially all inert solids larger in size than 1 um and substantially all biological solids larger than 250 um before the recirculated settled biologically treated waste reaches the first vessel.
- 12. A method of treating waste comprising:
- a. biologically treating liquid-borne waste comprising inert solids, the treatment including contact with biological solids; and
- b. continuously removing from the treated waste suspended inert solids without significant removal of biological solids larger in size than at least some of the removed inert solids.
- 13. The method of claim 12 further comprising the step of separating treated waste into a biomass phase and a liquid phase.
