Claims
- 1. A method of repairing a crack in a boiling water reactor core shroud comprising the steps of
- forming a pair of slots in the shroud on opposite sides of the crack in angled relation to one another so that the lateral spacing between the slots increases in a direction parallel to the crack;
- lowering a clamp with laterally spaced slides into an annular space between the core shroud and a reactor vessel;
- positioning the slides in the slots; and
- moving the clamp in the direction of increasing lateral spacing between the slots to prevent unacceptable opening of the crack during reactor operation by providing a structural load path which transmits structural loads across the crack.
- 2. A method of repairing a crack in a boiling water reactor core shroud as recited in claim 1 wherein the crack occurs in a vertical weld and said step of forming a pair of slots in the core shroud includes orienting the slots such that the lateral spacing between the slots increases in a downward direction.
- 3. A method of repairing a crack in a boiling water reactor core shroud as recited in claim 1 wherein said step of forming a pair of slots in the core shroud includes configuring the slots to limit radially outward movement of the clamp relative to the core shroud.
- 4. A method of repairing a crack in a boiling water reactor core shroud as recited in claim 3 wherein said step of forming a pair of slots in the core shroud includes configuring the slots such that, when the slides are positioned in the slots and moved in the direction of increasing lateral spacing, a portion of each slot adjacent the outer surface of the shroud extends circumferentially across an inserted portion of each slide to prevent radially outward movement of the clamp relative to the shroud.
- 5. A method of repairing a crack in a boiling water reactor core shroud as recited in claim 1 and further comprising the step of locking the clamp in place within the slots.
- 6. A method of repairing a crack in a boiling water reactor core shroud as recited in claim 5 wherein said locking step includes extending screws from the clamp in a direction opposite the direction of increasing lateral slot spacing to hold the clamp in place by contacting walls of the slots.
- 7. A method of repairing a crack in a boiling water reactor core shroud as recited in claim 5 wherein said locking step includes rotating a pair of locking members from an unlocked position to a locked position disposed between the clamp and walls of the slots.
