Claims
- 1. A method for sterilizing a medical device, comprising the steps of:a. placing said device in a multi-chambered compartment having a first rigid chamber, a second rigid chamber, and a sealable and adjustable interface between said first and second chambers such that the two chambers can be operated independently; b. adjusting the interface so that a device too big to fit into the first or second chamber can be sterilized in a bigger chamber formed by said first and second chamber; and c. introducing a sterilant from a source of sterilant in said multi-chambered compartment.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein prior to the placing step, said device is placed in a sterilant vapor-permeable and microorganism-impermeable container, said container maintaining the sterility of said device following sterilization.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein adjusting comprises removing.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the interface is a solid plate.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the second chamber is inside the first chamber.
- 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the interface is the wall of the second chamber.
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein adjusting is moving the interface.
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein said source of sterilant is placed in a location selected from the group consisting of: said first chambers; said second chamber; a container wherein said container is placed in said multi-chambered compartment; an enclosure placed outside of said multi-chambered compartment, wherein said enclosure is connected to one of said first and second chambers, or to both of said first and second chambers.
- 9. The method of claim 8, wherein said source of sterilant is a liquid reservoir.
- 10. The method of claim 1, wherein said sterilant comprises a liquid, a solid or condensed vapor.
- 11. The method of claim 10, wherein said sterilant is a liquid which comprises hydrogen peroxide or peracetic acid.
- 12. The method of claim 10, wherein sterilant is a solid hydrogen peroxide complex.
- 13. The method of claim 12, wherein said solid comprises a urea peroxide complex or sodium pyrophosphate peroxide complex.
- 14. The method of claim 10, wherein said sterilant is a condensed vapor, said method further comprising condensing sterilant vapor.
- 15. The method of claim 14, wherein said condensed vapor is of hydrogen peroxide or peracetic acid vapor.
- 16. The method of claim 1, further comprising reducing the pressure to vaporize the sterilant.
- 17. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of exposing said device to a plasma.
- 18. The method of claim 17, wherein said plasma is generated in a separate container and said method further comprises the step of flowing said plasma from said container into said first or second sterilization chamber.
- 19. A method for sterilizing a medical device, comprising the steps of:a. placing said device in a multi-chambered compartment having a first rigid chamber, a second rigid chamber, and an adjustable interface between said first and second chambers, wherein there is no opening on the interface and wherein either or both of said first and second chambers is a diffusion restricted environment; b. adjusting the interface so that a device too big to fit into the first or second chamber can be sterilized in a bigger chamber formed by said first and second chamber; and c. introducing a sterilant from a source of sterilant in said multi-chambered compartment.
