Claims
- 1. A method of stripping bonded insulation from an insulated metal wire of generally rectangular cross-section comprising the steps of:
- (a) engaging the insulation of the wire with the edge of a knife,
- (b) penetrating said insulation and said metal forming the wire with said knife edge by moving said knife edge in a substantially orthogonal direction through said insulation into said metal,
- (c) then moving said knife edge through a predetermined stroke in a longitudinal direction along the length of said wire while maintaining said edge in the metal of the wire during substantially said entire stroke to thereby remove from the wire a composite chip including a length of said insulation substantially equal to said stroke and a sliver of said metal of substantially the same length.
- 2. The method of claim 1 in combination with the additional step of clamping the wire while said chip is being removed so that said knife edge moves relative to said wire during said stroke.
- 3. The method of claim 1 in combination with the additional step of separating said composite chip from said wire by moving said knife edge in a substantially orthogonal direction away from said wire.
- 4. The method of claim 1 in which the edge of said knife is maintained a substantially constant predetermined distance from the outer surface of said insulation as said knife edge is moved through substantially said entire predetermined stroke.
- 5. The method of claim 1 in which:
- (a) said knife edge is maintained displaced from a predetermined reference plane by a predetermined distance while said knife edge is moved through substantially said entire predetermined stroke, and
- (b) said predetermined reference plane is maintained on the outer surface of still-unstripped insulation of said wire located ahead of said knife edge as said knife edge is moved through said predetermined stroke.
- 6. A method of stripping bonded insulation from an insulated wire comprising the steps of:
- (a) clamping a length of insulated wire,
- (b) penetrating with a knife the insulation and metal forming the wire by moving the knife in a substantially orthogonal direction with respect to the wire,
- (c) removing a composite chip from the wire by moving said knife in a first longitudinal direction along the length of the wire, said composite chip including the insulation and a sliver of metal forming the wire,
- (d) separating said chip from the wire by moving said knife in a substantially orthogonal direction away from the wire, and
- (e) unclamping said length of insulated wire by moving said knife in a second longitudinal direction along the length of the wire.
