Claims
- 1. A method for the enhancement of luminescence intensity from a reaction between adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and a luciferase/luciferin reactant system comprising the step of adding to the reactant mixture an amount of trehalose, a-D-glucopyranosyl-a-D-glucopyranoside, effective to increase the emission intensity obtained from the reaction by about 25% to about 100%.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the emission intensity is increased by more than 100%.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the amount of trehalose added to the reactant mixture corresponds to approximately the saturation solubility of trehalose.
- 4. A method for reducing the amount of luciferase in a firefly luciferase reactant system necessary to achieve a desired level of bioluminescent emission from a reaction with adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the method comprising the steps of reducing the amount of luciferase in a luciferase reactant system by a pre-determined amount, and adding a pre-determined quantity of trehalose, a-D-glucopyranosyl-a-D-glucopyranoside, to the reactant mixture effective to attain the desired level of emission.
