Claims
- 1. A method of producing a coil of battery plate strip having a single polarity for making lead-acid batteries comprising the steps of
- providing a battery grid strip with a reticulated grid strip portion having first and second sides, and first and second edges,
- passing said battery grid strip through a battery grid pasting station,
- placing a layer of material on said second side of said battery grid strip,
- applying battery paste to said battery grid strip to overpaste said first side of said battery grid strip,
- placing a second layer of material on said first side of said battery grid strip on top of said battery paste,
- forcing a portion of said battery paste through said reticulated grid strip portion to overpaste said second side, whereby both sides of said battery plate strip are overpasted,
- effecting said forcing of said battery paste through said reticulated grid strip portion by paste moving means, and
- coiling said single polarity battery plate strip.
- 2. The method of claim 1, including
- providing said paste moving means including roller means and
- profiling said battery paste by said roller means.
- 3. The method of claim 2, including
- profiling said battery paste with grooves by said roller means which establish a grooved profile on said pasted battery plate, said grooved profile having at least one groove which is disposed at an angle greater than about 45.degree. and less than 90.degree. on either side of a perpendicular plane transverse to said battery grid strip.
- 4. The method of claim 1, including
- tapering said battery paste so that the average thickness of said battery paste at said first edge of said reticulated grid strip portion is greater than the average thickness of said battery paste at said second edge of said reticulated grid strip portion.
- 5. The method of claim 4, including
- tapering said battery paste with roller means.
- 6. The method of claim 5, including
- profiling said battery paste with grooves by said roller means which establish a grooved profile on said pasted battery plate, said grooved profile having at least one groove which is disposed at an angle greater than about 45.degree. and less than 90.degree. on either side of a perpendicular line transverse to said battery grid strip.
- 7. The method of claim 4, including
- providing said battery paste at said first edge of said reticulated grid strip portion having said average thickness of about 0.030 to 0.160 inches.
- 8. The method of claim 7, including
- providing said battery paste at said second edge of said reticulated grid strip portion having said average thickness of about 0.010 to 0.150 inches.
- 9. The method of claim 8, including
- providing said battery paste at said first edge of said reticulated grid strip portion having said average thickness of about 0.040 to 0.070 inches.
- 10. The method of claim 9, including
- providing said battery paste at said second edge of said reticulated grid strip portion having said average thickness of about 0.025 to 0.050 inches.
- 11. The method of claim 1, including
- establishing spaces between adjacent wraps of said coiled pasted battery plate strip.
- 12. The method of claim 11, including
- providing said battery grid strip with a lug strip portion having protrusions.
- 13. The method of claim 11, including
- providing said battery plate strip with a lug strip portion and
- wrapping said lug strip portion with a spacing layer.
- 14. The method of claim 1, including
- effecting said overpasting of said second side sequentially after the portion of said battery grid strip having its second side overpasted has passed through the zone of said grip pasting station where said paste has been applied to said first side.
- 15. The method of claim 14, including
- providing a profiling station downstream from said grid pasting station, and
- overpasting said second side at said profiling station.
- 16. The method of claim 1, wherein
- said battery plate strip is positive battery plate stock.
- 17. The method of claim 1, wherein
- said battery plate strip is negative battery plate stock.
- 18. A method of coiling pasted battery stock having a single polarity comprising the steps of
- providing a strip of pasted battery plate stock having a single polarity comprising of a battery grid strip including a reticulated grid strip portion, a lug strip portion on one side of said reticulated grid strip portion and a border strip portion adjacent to said reticulated grid strip portion on an opposite side of said reticulated grid strip portion from said lug strip portion and a battery grid paste layer disposed on said reticulated grid strip portion, and
- wrapping said strip of pasted battery plate stock having a single polarity into a coil, whereby a space is maintained between adjacent wraps of said single polarity pasted battery plate stock.
- 19. The method of claim 18, including
- providing said lug strip portion having one or more protrusions.
- 20. The method of claim 18, including
- providing interposed spacer means between at least a major number of adjacent pairs of said wraps of said pasted battery plate stock.
- 21. The method of claim 20, including
- providing said spacer means adjacent to said lug strip portion.
- 22. The method of claim 18, wherein
- said battery plate strip is positive battery plate stock.
- 23. The method of claim 18, wherein
- said battery plate strip is negative battery plate stock.
