Claims
- 1. A method of stimulating the immune system of an animal in need of such immune system stimulation, comprising administering to said animal an effective amount of a limulus test-positive plant glycolipid wherein the limulus test-positive plant glycolipid has the following properties:
- Molecular weight: 8,000 .+-.1,000 (SDS electrophoresis)
- Number of phosphorus: not less than 1 per mol
- Number of hexosamine: 6 .+-.2 per mol
- Number of fatty acid moieties: 6 .+-.2 per mol.
- 2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the animal is a mammal and the immune system stimulation is osteogenesis.
- 3. The method according to claim 1, wherein the animal is an egg-bearing non-mammalian animal and the immune system stimulation is selected from the group consisting of oviposition and egg shell strength improvement.
- 4. The method according to claim 1, wherein the limulus test-positive plant glycolipid is obtained from a plant selected from the group consisting of Gymnospermae, Monocotyledoneae, Dicotyledoneae, Pteridophyta and Algae.
- 5. The method according to claim 4, wherein the Monocotyledoneae plant is Gramineae.
- 6. The method according to claim 5, wherein the Gramineae plant is rice.
- 7. The method according to claim 5, wherein the Gramineae plant is selected from the group consisting of wheat, barley, rye, and oat.
- 8. The method according to claim 4, wherein the Algae plant is selected from the group consisting of Phaenophyceae, Rhodophyceae, Chlorophyceae and Cyanophyceae.
- 9. The method according to claim 8, wherein the Chlorophyceae plant is chlorella.
- 10. The method according to claim 1, wherein the limulus test-positive plant glycolipid is obtained from a fungus.
- 11. The method according to claim 10, wherein the fungus is Basidiomycetes or Ascomycetes.
