Claims
- 1. A method for the synthesis of betaines of the general formula ##STR8## wherein R.sup.1 CO is an acyl group derived from a fatty acid or a fatty acid mixture with 6 to 8 carbon atoms,
- R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are the same or different and represent alkyl groups with 1 to 4 carbon atoms,
- x=2 or 3 and
- y=1, 2 or 3,
- by quaternizing the fatty acid amide dialkylamine of the general formula ##STR9## with chlorocarboxylic acids of the formula Cl(CH.sub.2).sub.y COOH or their salts in aqueous solution, comprising carrying out the reaction between about 115.degree. to 180.degree. C., until organically bound chlorine is about .ltoreq.10 ppm, the fatty acid amide dialkylamine optionally being quaternized at least partially in a first step between about 80.degree. to 100.degree. C.
- 2. The method of claim 1, comprising that the reaction is carried out at a temperature of between about 120.degree. to 140.degree. C.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the reaction is carried out until the derivatives of dichloroacetic acid can no longer be detected.
