Claims
- 1. A method for treating or preventing gastrointestinal diseases, comprising administering to a patient a therapeutically effective amount of epithelium-derived T-cell factor polypeptide, wherein said polypeptide is selected from the group consisting of:
- (a) a polypeptide comprising the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO 3;
- (b) a polypeptide comprising the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO 6; and
- (c) a polypeptide encoded by an isolated nucleic acid selected from the group consisting of:
- (i) DNA comprising nucleotides 145 through 486 of the DNA sequence of SEQ ID NOS 1 or 4;
- (ii) DNA that hybridizes to the DNA of (i) or their complementary strands under conditions of high stringency and upon expression encode mammalian epithelium-derived T-cell factor; and
- (iii) DNA that, due to degeneracy of the genetic code, encodes a polypeptide encoded by any of the foregoing DNA.
- 2. The method according to claim 1 wherein said gastrointestinal disease is chemo- or radiation-induced enteritis.
- 3. The method according to claim 1 wherein said epithelium-deprived T-cell factor polypeptide comprises the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO 3.
- 4. The method according to claim 1 wherein said epithelium-derived T-cell factor polypeptide comprises the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO 6.
- 5. The method according to claim 1 wherein said epithelium-derived T-cell factor polypeptide is contained within a diluent or carrier.
