Claims
- 1. Polyclonal antibodies reactive with a reproductive protein hormone endogenous and non-immunogenic to a selected mammalian species, said antibodies being non-immunogenic to and produced in a mammal of said selected species by administering to said mammal, an effective amount of a polypeptide determinant of said reproductive hormone conjugated to a carrier biologically foreign to said selected mammalian species, said polypeptide determinant selected from a group consisting of said reproductive protein hormone endogenous to said selected mammalian species, a fragment of said protein hormone, and a synthetic polypeptide including at least one epitope of said endogenous protein hormone; said polypeptide determinant selected from said group having the properties of:
- a) prior to conjugation to said carrier, being essentially non-immunogenic to said mammal; and
- b) after conjugation to said carrier and said administration, causing said antibodies to be formed in said mammal of said selected species which are reactive against said endogenous reproductive protein hormone.
- 2. The polyclonal antibodies defined in claim 1 wherein said mammal is human and the reproductive protein hormone is human chorionic gonadotropin.
- 3. Polyclonal antibodies formed in a selected mammal in response to administration of a polypeptide derived from said selected mammal which is substantially non-immunogenic to said selected mammal which has been modified outside the body of said mammal prior to said administration, said antibodies being reactive with a reproductive protein hormone endogenous and non-immunogenic to said selected mammal.
- 4. The polyclonal antibodies defined in claim 3 wherein said polypeptide is a non-immunogenic synthetic amino acid comprising at least one immunological determinant of said endogenous and non-immunogenic reproductive protein hormone.
- 5. The polyclonal antibodies defined in claim 3 wherein said polypeptide comprises one or more immunological determinants of a reproductive hormone.
- 6. The polyclonal antibodies defined in claim 3 wherein said reproductive hormone is chorionic gonadotropin.
- 7. The polyclonal antibodies defined in claim 6 wherein said mammal is human and said polypeptide comprises one or more immunological determinants of the beta subunit of chorionic gonadotropin.
- 8. The polyclonal antibodies defined in claim 7 wherein said polypeptide comprises at least two immunological determinants found in the 111 to 145 amino acid sequence of the beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin.
- 9. The polyclonal antibodies defined in claim 3 wherein said polypeptide administered to said mammal comprises a vaccine composition.
- 10. The polyclonal antibodies defined in claim 9 wherein said vaccine composition comprises said polypeptide conjugated to a carrier biologically foreign to said mammal.
- 11. The polyclonal antibodies defined in claim 7 wherein said polypeptide is the amino acid sequence 111 to 145 of the beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin.
