Claims
- 1. A method of aseptically sealing an aseptic storage tank containing sterile product comprising the steps of:
- connecting first and second aseptic valves in series with an opening in the tank,
- closing the first valve to seal the valve-closure cavity of the first valve from the tank opening to which a first port of the first valve communicates when the first valve is open,
- introducing liquid chemical sterilant into the valve-closure cavities of the first and second valves to sterilize and establish first and second aseptic barriers between the tank opening and the environment, and
- closing the second valve to seal the valve-closure cavity from the first valve-closure.
- 2. A method of sterilizing a product line connected to supply sterile product to an aseptic tank via first and second valves series-connected between the product line and an opening in the tank, comprising the steps of:
- filling the valve closure cavity of the first valve with chemical sterilant while said first valve is closed to establish an aseptic barrier between a) the tank opening to which the first valve is connected and b) the second valve,
- closing the second valve to seal the second valve cavity from the first valve cavity,
- connecting the product line to a port in the second valve in communication with said second valve cavity, and
- circulating sterilant through said product line and said second valve cavity via said port while maintaining said second valve closed to aseptically isolate said tank interior from said product line during sterilization of said product line.
- 3. The method of claim 2 further including the steps of:
- introducing sterile food into said product line to purge it of sterilant, and
- opening said first and second valves to fill said tank with sterile product from said product line.
