Claims
- 1. A method of assembling a switch and terminal assembly with an end frame for a dynamoelectric machine, the end frame including a pair of generally opposite end faces, the switch and terminal assembly having a casing with a plurality of walls, and a plurality of terminals secured to the casing with at least some of the terminals having electrical connector sections extending generally in row formation along one of the walls of the casing, respectively, and a separate ground terminal including a ground connector section, and a ground strap having a distal end portion and another portion interconnected between the ground connection section and the distal end portion, the method comprising the steps of:
- disposing at least a part of another of the walls of the casing adjacent the one wall thereof in engagement with one of the opposite faces of the end frame and arranging the switch and terminal assembly in an assembly position on the end frame;
- associating the separate ground terminal with the casing and arranging the ground connector section of the separate ground terminal generally in the row formation with the electrical connector sections of the at least some terminals along the one wall of the casing;
- placing the another portion of the ground strap in overlaying relation with at least a third one of the walls on the casing and overlaying the distal end portion of the ground strap with the one opposite face of the end frame during the associating and arranging step; and
- securing the distal end portion of the ground strap in ground circuit relation with the end frame.
- 2. A method of assembling a switch and terminal assembly with an end frame for a dynamoelectric machine, the switch and terminal assembly including a casing having a plurality of wall means for defining at least one switch element accommodating chamber within the casing, a plurality of terminals secured to the casing along at least one of the walls means thereof with at least some of the terminals having electrical connector sections extending generally in row formation along the at least one wall means of the casing, respectively, and a threaded opening in the casing extending at least in part through the casing and intersecting with another of the wall means in the casing adjacent the at least one wall means thereof, the end frame including a pair of generally opposite faces, and another opening intersecting with the opposite faces, grounding means for the dynamoelectric machine including a ground terminal having a ground connector section thereon, and a ground strap connected with the ground terminal, and a mounting screw having a head portion and a threaded portion, the method comprising the steps of:
- associating the grounding means with the casing;
- arranging the ground connector section on the ground terminal of the grounding means generally in the row formation with the electrical connector sections of the at least some terminals along the at least one wall of the casing and overlaying at least in part the ground strap of the grounding means with the another wall means of the casing during the associating step;
- mounting the casing in an assembly position to the end frame with the another wall means of the casing at least in adjacent facing relation with one of the opposite faces of the end frame and abutting the ground strap of the grounding means at least in part between the another wall means of the casing and the one opposite face of the end frame in ground circuit relation; and
- aligning generally the threaded opening in the casing with the another opening in the end frame during the mounting and abutting step and passing the threaded portion of the mounting screw from adjacent the other of the opposite faces of the end frame through at least the generally aligned threaded and another opening into threaded engagement with the threaded opening with the head portion of the ground screw being arranged in abutment with the other opposite face of the end frame generally about the another opening therein.
- 3. The method as set forth in claim 2 wherein the grounding means further includes a third opening in the ground strap and wherein the aligning and passing step includes placing the third opening in the ground strap generally in alignment with the threaded opening and the another opening and engaging the threaded portion of the mounting screw with the ground strap within the third opening therein so that the engagement of the threaded portion of the mounting screw with the ground strap and the head portion of the mounting screw with the other opposite face of the end frame at least assists in placing the end frame and the grounding means in ground circuit relation with each other.
- 4. A method of assembling a switch and terminal assembly with an end frame for a dynamoelectric machine, the switch and terminal assembly including a casing having a plurality of wall means for defining at least one switch element accommodating chamber within the casing, and a plurality of terminals secured to the casing along at least one of the wall means thereof with at least some of the terminals having electrical connector sections extending generally in row formation along the at least one wall means of the casing, the end frame including a pair of generally opposite faces, and an opening in the end frame between the opposite faces thereof, and grounding means for the dynamoelectric machine including a ground terminal having a ground connector section, and a ground strap connected with the ground terminal and having a distal portion with another opening therein, and a ground device for the dynamoelectric machine, the method comprising the steps of:
- placing the grounding means in association with the switch and terminal assembly;
- arranging the ground connector section of the ground terminal on the grounding means generally in the row formation with the electrical connector sections of the at least some terminals along the at least one wall means of the casing and extending the distal portion of the ground strap beyond the casing generally from another of the wall means of the casing adjacent the at least one wall means thereof;
- disposing the switch and terminal assembly in an assembly position on the end frame with the another wall means of the casing being in facing relation with one of the opposite faces of the end frame at least adjacent thereto and overlaying at least the distal portion of the ground strap with the one opposite face of the end frame;
- aligning generally the another opening in the distal portion of the ground strap with the first named opening in the end frame during the disposing and overlaying step;
- passing the ground device from adjacent the other of the opposite faces of the end frame through the generally first named opening therein into the another opening in the distal portion of the ground strap; and
- interconnecting a part of the ground device with the ground strap at least adjacent the another opening in the distal portion thereof and abutting another part of the ground device with the other opposite face of the end frame generally about the first named opening therein during the passing step thereby to connect the grounding means and the end frame, in ground circuit
- 5. The method as set forth in claim 4 wherein the grounding means further includes another portion interposed between the ground connector section and the distal portion thereof and wherein the arranging and extending step includes associating the another portion of the grounding means at least in part in overlaying relation with the another wall means.
- 6. The method as set forth in claim 5 wherein the mounting and overlaying step includes capturing the at least part of the another portion of the ground strap in abutment between the another wall means of the casing and the one opposite face of the end frame.
- 7. The method as set forth in claim 4 wherein the switch and terminal assembly further includes at least one hanger bracket on the casing extending beyond the another wall means thereof and wherein the disposing and overlaying step includes extending the at least one hanger bracket across the opposite faces of the end frame and gripping the at least one hanger bracket in engagement with the other opposite face of the end frame at least when the switch and terminal assembly is in its assembly position.
- 8. A method of assembling a switch and terminal assembly with an end frame for a dynamoelectric machine, the switch and terminal assembly including a casing having a plurality of wall means for defining at least one switch element accommodating chamber within the casing, and a plurality of terminals associated with the casing with at least some of the terminals having electrical connector sections extending generally in row formation along at least one of the wall means of the casing, respectively, grounding means for the dynamoelectric machine including a ground terminal having a ground connector section, and a ground strap connected to the ground terminal and having a distal portion with an opening therein, the end frame including a pair of gener connected to the ground terminal and having a distal portion with an opening therein, the end frame including a pair of generally opposite faces, and another opening in the end frame between the opposite faces therof, and a ground device for the dynamoelectric machine, the method comprising the steps of:
- disposing the switch and terminal assembly in an assembly portion on the end frame and overlaying at least a part of another of the wall means of the casing adjacent the at least one wall means thereof with one of the opposite faces of the end frame;
- associating the grounding means with the switch and terminal assembly at least when the switch and terminal assembly is disposed in its assembly position on the end frame;
- arranging the ground connector section of the ground terminal on the grounding means generally in the row formation with the electrical connector sections of the at least some terminals along the at least one wall means of the casing and associating at least a part of the ground strap in overlaying relation with an least a third one of the wall means of the casing and the distal portion of the ground strap in overlaying relation with the one opposite face of the end frame, respectively;
- aligning generally the first named opening in the distal portion of the ground strap with the another opening in the end frame during the arranging and associating step;
- passing the ground device from adjacent the other of the opposite faces of the end frame through the generally aligned first named opening in the distal portion of the ground strap and the another opening in the end frame, respectively; and
- interconnecting a part of the ground device with the distal portion of the ground strap at least adjacent the first named opening therein and abutting another part of the ground device with the other opposite face of the end frame at least adjacent the another opening therein so as to couple the grounding means and the end frame in ground circuit relation during the passing step.
- 9. A method of assembling a switch and terminal assembly to a dynamoelectric machine having a core therein spaced from at least one end frame of the dynamoelectric machine and with a rotatable assembly extending at least in part through the core and the at least one end frame, respectively, the at least one end frame including a pair of generally opposite faces, the switch and terminal assembly including a casing having a plurality of wall means for defining at least one switch element accommodating chamber within the casing, and a plurality of terminals associated with at least one of the wall means of the casing with at least some of the terminals having an electrical connector section arranged generally in row formation along the at least one wall means of the casing, and grounding means for the dynamoelectric machine including a ground terminal having a ground connector section, and a ground strap connected with the ground terminal, and a ground device for the dynamoelectric machine, the method comprising the steps of:
- associating the grounding means with the switch and terminal assembly;
- arranging the ground connector section of the ground terminal on the grounding means generally in the row formation with the electrical connector section of the at least some terminals along the at least one wall means of the casing and overlaying at least a part of the ground strap with another of the wall means of the casing adjacent the at least one wall means thereof during the associating step;
- inserting the switch and terminal assembly and the grounding means associated with the casing of the switch and terminal assembly between one of the opposite faces of the at least one end frame and the core of the dynamoelectric machine;
- arranging the switch and terminal assembly in an assembly position on the at least one end frame;
- placing the another wall means of the casing at least adjacent the one opposite face of the at least one end frame and disposing thereby the at least part of the ground strap between the one opposite face of the at least one end frame and the another wall means of the casing during the arranging step; and
- interconnecting the ground device with the casing, the at least part of the ground strap and the other of the opposite faces of the at least one end frame so as to place the grounding means in ground circuit relation with the at least one end frame and retaining thereby the switch and terminal assembly against displacement from its assembly position on the at least one end frame.
- 10. A method of assembling a switch and terminal assembly to a dynamoelectric machine having a core therein spaced from at least one end frame of the dynamoelectric machine and with a rotatable assembly extending at least in part through the core and the at least one end frame, respectively, the at least one end frame including a pair of generally opposite faces, the switch and terminal assembly including a casing having a plurality of wall means for defining at least one switch element accommodating chamber within the casing, and a plurality of terminals associated with the at least one of the wall means of the casing with at least some of the terminals having an electrical connector section arranged generally in row formation along the at least one wall means of the casing, grounding means for the dynamoelectric machine including a ground terminal having a ground connector section, and a ground strap connected with the ground terminal, and a ground device for association with the at least one end frame and the grounding means, the method comprising the steps of:
- inserting the switch and terminal assembly between one of the opposite faces of the at least one end frame and the core and arranging the switch and terminal assembly in an assembly position on the at least end frame;
- abutting at least a part of another of the wall means on the casing against the one opposite face of the at least one end frame during the inserting and arranging step;
- associating the grounding means with the switch and terminal assembly at least upon the arrangement of the switch and terminal assembly in its assembly position;
- arranging the ground connector section of the ground terminal on the grounding means generally in the row formation with the electrical connector sections of the at least some terminals along the at least one wall means of the casing and overlaying the ground strap in part with at least a third one of the wall means of the casing and the one opposite face of the at least one end frame, respectively; and
- interconnecting the ground device in ground circuit relation between at least the other opposite face of the at least one end frame and the part of the ground strap overlaying the one opposite face of the at least one end frame.

This application is a division of the commonly assigned and then copending parent application Ser. No. 496,524 filed May 20, 1983 (not U.S. Pat. No. 4,594,773 issued June 17, 1986), and this application is related to the commonly assigned Robert W. White application Ser. No. 402,320 filed July 27, 1982 entitled "Dynamoelectric Machine" (now U.S. Pat. No. 4,473,764 issued Sept. 25, 1984) and also the commonly assigned James L. King application Ser. No. 496,552 filed May 20, 1983 (now abandoned) entitled "Method of Assemblying A Dynamoelectric Machine", and each of these aforementioned parent and related applications is incorporated by reference herein.
