Claims
- 1. A composite broach unit for broaching an outer peripheral surface of a resin layer of a resin-coated lobe-type rotor of a rotary fluid machine of a Roots type, comprising:
- a leading preliminary cutter having at least one relatively narrow grooving tooth for forming at least one chip-breaker groove in the outer peripheral surface of said resin layer, said at least one grooving tooth extending in a broaching direction parallel to an axis of rotation of said rotor;
- a trailing finish cutter for finishing the outer peripheral surface of said resin layer, said finish cutter having a relatively wider cutting edge contour as compared to each said at least one grooving tooth, said cutting edge corresponding to at least a part of an entire outer periphery of said rotor; and
- support means for supporting said preliminary and finish cutters such that said preliminary cutter leads said finish cutter in said broaching direction.
- 2. A composite broach unit according to claim 1, wherein said support means comprises a slide movable in said direction, said preliminary and finish cutters being mounted on said slide such that said preliminary and finish cutters are spaced apart from each other in said broaching direction.
- 3. A composite broach unit according to claim 1, wherein said preliminary cutter has a plurality of grooving teeth which are spaced apart from each other in a direction along said portion of the entire periphery of said rotor to be finished by said finish cutter.
- 4. A composite broach unit according to claim 1, wherein a height dimension of said at least one grooving tooth is not greater than an amount of stock removed by said finish cutter.
- 5. A formed broach for broaching an outer peripheral surface of a resin layer of a resin-coated lobe-type rotor of a rotary fluid machine of a Roots type, by a broaching movement of said formed broach relative to said outer peripheral surface in a broaching direction parallel to an axis of rotation of said rotor, said formed broach comprising:
- a leading grooving portion including at least one relatively narrow grooving tooth which has a cutting edge for forming at least one chip-breaker groove in the outer peripheral surface of said resin layer, that said at least one groove extends in said broaching direction; and
- a trailing finishing portion for finishing the outer peripheral surface of said resin layer after said at least one chip-breaker groove is cut in said outer peripheral surface by said grooving portion, said finishing portion being formed adjacent to and trailing said leading grooving portion in said broaching direction, and having a relatively wider cutting edge as compared to each said at least one grooving tooth, said cutting edge having a contour which corresponds to at least a part of an entire periphery of said rotor, a distance between the cutting edge of said finishing portion and said axis of rotation of the rotor being equal to the between the cutting edge of said grooving portion and said axis of rotation.
- 6. A formed broach according to claim 5, wherein said leading grooving portion has a plurality of grooving teeth which are spaced apart from each other in a direction along said portion of the entire periphery of said rotor to be finished by said trailing finishing portion.
- 7. A formed broach according to claim 5, wherein the contour of the cutting edge of said leading finishing portion corresponds to said entire periphery of said rotor.
- 8. A formed broach according to claim 7, wherein the cutting edge of said trailing finishing portion is provided by an edge which defines one of opposite open ends of an aperture formed through a generally planar body in said broaching direction, said aperture having a profile corresponding to said entire periphery of said rotor, said at least one grooving tooth extending from said edge of said aperture in said broaching direction.
- 9. A broach for broaching an outer peripheral surface of a resin layer of a resin-coated lobe-type rotor of a rotary fluid machine of a Roots type, by a broaching movement of said formed broach relative to said outer peripheral surface in a broaching direction parallel to an axis of rotation of said rotor, said lobe-type rotor consisting of a plurality of lobes symmetrical with each other with respect to said axis of rotation, each of said plurality of lobes having an external cross sectional profile which consists of two symmetrical curved components, said broach comprising:
- a trailing finishing portion for finishing the outer peripheral surface of said resin layer, said finishing portion having a cutting edge contour corresponding to at least a part of an entire periphery of said rotor; and
- a leading grooving portion which leads said trailing finishing portion in said broaching direction, said grooving portion having at least one grooving tooth for forming at least one chip-breaker groove in the outer peripheral surface of said resin layer, such that said at least one groove extends in said broaching direction, each said at least one grooving tooth being relatively narrower as compared with said cutting edge of said finishing portion, and being positioned with respect to said part of the entire periphery of said rotor so that each of said at least one chip-breaker groove is located at a point selected along the corresponding one of said two symmetrical curved components of the external cross sectional profile of the corresponding lobe of said rotor, such that none of a first group of angles, each of which is formed between a first straight line passing the point of said each chip-breaker groove and said axis of rotation of said rotor, and a second straight line passing said axis of rotation and one of opposite ends of said corresponding curved component of the external profile of said corresponding lobe, is equal to any one of a second group of angles each of which is formed between said first straight line and a third straight line passing said axis of rotation of said rotor and the other end of said corresponding curved components of said external profile.
- 10. A broach according to claim 9, wherein said lobe-type rotor has two lobes symmetrical with each other with respect to said axis of rotation, and said cutting edge contour of said finishing portion corresponds to said entire periphery of said rotor, said grooving portion having eight grooving teeth so that two chip-breaker grooves are formed in each of said two symmetrical curved components of each of said two lobes.
- 11. A broach according to claim 9, wherein said finishing portion has a cutting edge formed as an edge which defines one of opposite open ends of an aperture formed through a generally planar body in said broaching direction, said aperture having a profile corresponding to said entire periphery of said rotor, said at least one grooving tooth extending from said edge of said aperture in said broaching direction.
- 12. A broach according to claim 11, wherein a cutting edge of said at least one grooving tooth is spaced a predetermined distance away from said cutting edge of said finishing portion inwardly of said entire periphery of said rotor in a radial direction perpendicular to said axis of rotation of said rotor, whereby said at least one chip-breaker groove is partially left in the outer peripheral surface of said resin layer which has been finished by said finishing portion.
