Claims
- 1. The method of butt welding opposed edges of sheet material, in a continuous process, comprising the steps of, urging said edges into vertically spaced overlapping relationship with each other under pressure, causing said edges to converge toward each other while in said overlapping relationship as said edges are being continuously advanced in a longitudinal direction, spreading said edges out of overlapping relationship against the urging pressure so that said edges intersect each other in intimate abutting engagement at a point of convergence and welding said edges which are in intimate engagement at the point of convergence to form a butt welded seam.
- 2. The method of continuously butt welding the opposed edges of sheet material comprising the steps of:
- A. urging said edges into vertically convering overlapping grooves of a Z-bar under pressure,
- B. advancing the sheet material longitudinally along said grooves thereby causing the edges to converge vertically relative to each other while the edges are in said overlapping relationship within the Z-bar;
- C. spreading the edges of the sheet material out of said overlapping relationship into abutting relationship at a point of convergence as the sheet material is moved out of engagement with the grooves of the Z-bar while continuously urging the edges into such intimate abutting relationship with each other;
- D. welding the edges of the sheet material which are in intimate abutting relationship at the point of convergence to form a butt welded seam.
- 3. The method of claim 1 including the initial step of forming the sheet material into a cylindrical shape having opposing edges.
- 4. The method of claim 3 in which the edges are heated by a laser welder to form a butt weld.
