Claims
- 1. In the method of coating a steel substrate to be used in the thermal cracking of hydrocarbons, the improvement wherein the surface of the substrate carries a refractory oxide coating provided by the steps of
- (i) contacting the surface with a sol comprising a dispersion, in a liquid medium, of substantially unaggregated colloidal primary particles of a refractory material, the sol being capable of conversion to a gel the bulk density of which being at least 40% of the theoretical density of the refractory oxide when measured at ambient temperature and the gel being convertible to the refractory oxide;
- (ii) drying the sol to convert the sol to a gel coating; and
- (iii) firing to convert the gel coating to the refractory oxide coating, thereby to reduce carbonaceous deposition on the surface.
- 2. In the method of coating a steel substrate according to claim 1, the improvement wherein the refractory oxide is silica.
- 3. In the method of coating a steel substrate according to claim 1, the improvement wherein the refractory oxide is ceria.
- 4. In the method of coating a steel substrates according to claim 1 or claim 3, the improvement wherein the steel substrate comprises a fuel can for a nuclear reactor.
- 5. In the method of coating a steel substrate according to claim 1 or claim 3, the improvement wherein the steel substrate comprises a cracker tube for use in the thermal cracking of hydrocarbons.
