- 2. The method of comminuting vulcanized rubber pellets a set forth in claim 1 further including the steps of mixing pellets and water to form the slurry and pumping the slurry to the receiving region.
- 3. The method of comminuting vulcanized rubber pellets as set forth in claim 1 wherein the urging step includes rotating radially disposed impeller blades disposed in the receiving region to impell the pellets radially outward into the outwardly extending recesses.
- 4. The method of comminuting vulcanized rubber pellets as set forth in claim 3 further including the step of grinding away the impeller blades against a stator abrasive surface at a rate commensurate with a rate at which the rotor and stator peripheral abrasive surfaces grind each other away.
- 5. The method of comminuting vulcanized rubber pellets as set forth in claim 1 further including the step of forcing the rotor and stator peripheral abrasive surfaces into intimate physical contact with only the vulcanized rubber pellets maintaining a spaced relationship therebetween.
- 6. A method of comminuting vulcanized rubber pellets as set forth in claim 2 wherein the rotor and stator peripheral abrasive surfaces are forced together with a pressure which balances the pressure developed between the rotor and stator by the urging step such that a thin film of water and rubber particles is maintained between the rotor and stator abrasive surfaces.
- 7. A method of comminuting pellets comprising:
- receiving a slurry of the pellets and water in a receiving region disposed between a rotor and stator, the rotor and stator having peripheral abrasive surfaces surrounding the receiving region for defining a grinding zone therebetween;
- urging the slurry radially outward under increased pressure between the rotor and stator peripheral abrasive surfaces by rotating impeller blades in the receiving region;
- forcing the rotor and stator peripheral abrasive surfaces toward each other;
- continuing rotation of the rotor to comminute the pellets into small particles.
- 8. The comminuting method as set forth in claim 7 in which the pellets are an elastomeric material.
- 9. The comminuting method as set forth in claim 7 further including the step of grinding away the impeller on an abutting abrasive surface of the stator which stator abrasive surface in part defines the receiving region.
- 10. The comminuting method as set forth in claim 9 further including the step of forcing the rotor and stator together as the rotor and stator peripheral abrasive surfaces wear each other away and wherein the impeller grinding step includes grinding away the impeller at a commensurate rate with the wearing away of the rotor and stator peripheral abrasive surfaces.
- 11. The comminuting method as set forth in claim 7 further including the step of forcing the rotor and stator peripheral abrasive surfaces together without a fixed gap or stop such that the comminuted pellets are the only material which prevent the rotor and stator peripheral abrasive surfaces from grinding directly against each other.
- 12. A method of comminuting elastomeric pellets comprising:
- receiving a slurry of the pellets and a fluid in a receiving region disposed between a rotor and stator, the rotor and stator having peripheral abrasive surfaces surrounding the receiving region for defining a grinding zone therebetween;
- urging the pellets outward from the receiving region between the rotor and stator peripheral abrasive surfaces;
- forcing the rotor and stator peripheral abrasive surfaces together toward intimate physical contact such that the elastomeric pellets provide the only medium for preventing the rotor and stator peripheral abrasive surfaces for grinding directly one upon the other; and,
- comminuting the elastomeric pellets between the rotor and stator peripheral abrasive surfaces by rotating the rotor peripheral abrasive surface relative to the stator peripheral abrasive surface to comminute the elastomeric pellets therebetween.
- 13. The method of comminuting elastomeric pellets as set forth in claim 12 wherein in the forcing step the rotor and stator peripheral abrasive surfaces are forced together with at least 2,000 pounds of force.
- 14. The method of comminuting elastomeric pellets as set forth in claim 12 wherein wherein the urging step includes urging the pellets into a plurality of generally radially oriented rotor recesses which extend partially across the rotor peripheral abrasive surface and wherein the pellets are passed out of the rotor recesses into contact with the stator peripheral abrasive surface and are ground into particles which pass between the rotor and stator peripheral abrasive surfaces.
- 15. The method of comminuting elastomeric pellets as set forth in claim 14 wherein the rotor recesses have sloping portions and further including the step of wedging the pellets between the rotor recess sloping portion and the stator peripheral abrasive surface into the grinding zone.
- 16. The method of comminuting elastomeric pellets as set forth in claim 12 wherein the urging step includes impelling the pellets centrifugally outward with radially disposed impeller vanes.
- 17. The method as set forth in claim 12 wherein the elastomeric pellets are vulcanized rubber and wherein the fluid is water.
- 18. The method of comminuting elastomeric pellets as set forth in claim 17 wherein in the comminuting step the vulcanized rubber particles spiral outward between the rotor and stator peripheral abrasive surfaces remaining therebetween until the particles have a median diameter of less than fifty microns.
