Claims
- 1. A method of driving a solid-state image sensor having an effective pixel area formed of a plurality of pixels in an array having M pixels in the vertical direction and N pixels in the horizontal direction wherein a scanning pixel area formed of m pixels in the vertical direction and n pixels in the horizontal direction (where M>m, N.gtoreq.n) is established within said effective pixel area, and wherein charges stored in the pixels in said scanning pixel area are transferred by vertical CCDs driven by a first scanning pulse to a horizontal CCD and the charges transferred to said horizontal CCD are transferred by said horizontal CCD driven by a second scanning pulse to an output portion of said horizontal CCD, said method comprising the steps of:
- driving said vertical CCDs during a vertical high-speed scanning period by a third scanning pulse having a higher frequency than the frequency of said first scanning pulse so that charges stored in the pixels in said effective pixel area outside said scanning pixel area are transferred at high speed to said horizontal CCD during the vertical high-speed scanning period; and
- stopping the driving of said horizontal CCD during an entirety of the vertical high-speed scanning period during which said vertical CCDs are driven by said third scanning pulse so that at least a part of the charges transferred from said vertical CCDs to said horizontal CCD overflow into said output portion of said horizontal CCD.
- 2. A method according to claim 1, wherein the step of stopping the driving of said horizontal CCD during an entirety of the vertical high-speed scanning period during which said vertical CCDs are driven by said third scanning pulse includes maintaining a potential of said horizontal CCD higher than a potential of said output portion of said horizontal CCD during the entirety of the vertical high-speed scanning period during which said vertical CCDs are driven by said third scanning pulse, thereby causing at least a part of the charges transferred from said vertical CCDs to said horizontal CCD to overflow into said output portion of said horizontal CCD.
- 3. A method of driving a solid-state image sensor having an effective pixel area formed of a plurality of pixels in an array having M pixels in the vertical direction and N pixels in the horizontal direction wherein a scanning pixel area formed of m pixels in the vertical direction and n pixels in the horizontal direction (where M>m, N.gtoreq.n) is established within said effective pixel area, and wherein charges stored in the pixels in said scanning pixel area are transferred by vertical CCDs driven by a first scanning pulse to a horizontal CCD and the charges transferred to said horizontal CCD are transferred by said horizontal CCD driven by a second scanning pulse to an output portion of said horizontal CCD, said method comprising the steps of:
- driving said vertical CCDs by a third scanning pulse having a higher frequency than the frequency of said first scanning pulse so that charges stored in the pixels in said effective pixel area outside said scanning pixel area are transferred at high speed to said horizontal CCD; and
- stopping the driving of said horizontal CCD for a period during which said vertical CCDs are driven by said third scanning pulse so that at least a part of the charges transferred from said vertical CCDs to said horizontal CCD overflow into said output portion of said horizontal CCD;
- wherein said output portion of said horizontal CCD is held in a reset state for said period during which said vertical CCDs are driven by said third scanning pulse so that the charges transferred from said effective pixel area outside said scanning pixel area to said horizontal CCD are swept out.
- 4. A method of driving a solid-state image sensor having an effective pixel area formed of a plurality of pixels in an array having M pixels in the vertical direction and N pixels in the horizontal direction wherein a scanning pixel area formed of m pixels in the vertical direction and n pixels in the horizontal direction (where M>m, N.gtoreq.n) is established within said effective pixel area, and wherein charges stored in the pixels in said scanning pixel area are transferred by vertical CCDs driven by a first scanning pulse to a horizontal CCD and the charges transferred to said horizontal CCD are transferred by said horizontal CCD driven by a second scanning pulse to an output portion of said horizontal CCD, said method comprising the steps of:
- driving said vertical CCDs during a vertical high-speed scanning period by a third scanning pulse having a higher frequency than the frequency of said first scanning pulse so that charges stored in the pixels in said effective pixel area outside said scanning pixel area are transferred at high speed to said horizontal CCD during the vertical high-speed scanning period;
- stopping the driving of said horizontal CCD during an entirety of the vertical high-speed scanning period during which said vertical CCDs are driven by said third scanning pulse so that at least a part of the charges transferred from said vertical CCDs to said horizontal CCD overflow into said output portion of said horizontal CCD; and
- driving said horizontal CCD during a horizontal high-speed scanning period with a fourth scanning pulse having a higher frequency than the frequency of said second scanning pulse so that remaining charges transferred from the pixels in said effective pixel area outside said scanning pixel area to said horizontal CCD are transferred at high speed to said output portion of said horizontal CCD during the horizontal high-speed scanning period;
- wherein the horizontal high-speed scanning period is subsequent to the vertical Nigh-speed scanning period within a vertical blanking period.
- 5. A method according to claim 4, wherein the step of stopping the driving of said horizontal CCD during an entirety of the vertical high-speed scanning period during which said vertical CCDs are driven by said third scanning pulse includes maintaining a potential of said horizontal CCD higher than a potential of said output portion of said horizontal CCD during the entirety of the vertical high-speed scanning period during which said vertical CCDs are driven by said third scanning pulse, thereby causing at least a part of the charges transferred from said vertical CCDs to said horizontal CCD to overflow into said output portion of said horizontal CCD.
- 6. A method of driving a solid-state image sensor having an effective pixel area formed of a plurality of pixels in an array having M pixels in the vertical direction and N pixels in the horizontal direction wherein a scanning pixel area formed of m pixels in the vertical direction and n pixels in the horizontal direction (where M>m, N.gtoreq.n) is established within said effective pixel area and wherein charges stored in the pixels in said scanning pixel area are transferred by vertical CCDs driven by a first scanning pulse to a horizontal CCD and the charges transferred to said horizontal CCD are transferred by said horizontal CCD driven by a second scanning pulse to an output portion of said horizontal CCD, said method comprising the steps of:
- driving said vertical CCDs by a third scanning pulse having a higher frequency than the frequency of said first scanning pulse so that charges stored in the pixels in said effective pixel area outside said scanning pixel area are transferred at high speed to said horizontal CCD;
- stopping the driving of said horizontal CCD for a period during which said vertical CCDs are driven by said third scanning pulse so that at least a part of the charges transferred from said vertical CCDs to said horizontal CCD overflow into said output portion of said horizontal CCD; and
- driving said horizontal CCD with a fourth scanning pulse having a higher frequency than the frequency of said second scanning pulse so that remaining charges transferred from the pixels in said effective pixel area outside said scanning pixel area to said horizontal CCD are transferred at high speed to said output portion of said horizontal CCD, after the step of stopping the driving of said horizontal CCD and within a vertical blanking period;
- wherein said output portion of said horizontal CCD is held in a reset state for said period during which said vertical CCDs are driven by said third scanning pulse so that the charges transferred from said effective pixel area outside said scanning pixel area to said horizontal CCD are swept out.
- 7. A method of driving a solid-state image sensor, the solid-state image sensor including
- an array of pixels for storing charges, the array of pixels including an effective pixel area constituted by M.times.N pixels disposed in M rows of pixels and N columns of pixels, the effective pixel area including
- a scanning pixel area constituted by m.times.n of the M.times.N pixels, the m.times.n pixels being disposed in m of the M rows of pixels and n of the N columns of pixels, wherein m<M and n.ltoreq.N, and
- an extra-scanning pixel area outside the scanning pixel area, the extra-scanning pixel area being constituted by (M.times.N)-(m.times.n) of the M.times.N pixels,
- vertical CCDs for receiving the charges stored in the pixels in the N columns of pixels and for transferring the charges in a vertical direction to ends of the vertical CCDs,
- a horizontal CCD for receiving the charges transferred by the vertical CCDs from the ends of the vertical CCDs and for transferring the charges in a horizontal direction to an end of the horizontal CCD, and
- an output portion for receiving the charges transferred by the horizontal CCD from the end of the horizontal CCD and for outputting the charges,
- the method comprising the steps of:
- driving the vertical CCDs during a readout scanning period with vertical readout scanning pulses to transfer the charges stored in the pixels of the scanning pixel area to the horizontal CCD;
- driving the horizontal CCD during the readout scanning period with horizontal readout scanning pulses to transfer the charges transferred by the vertical CCDs during the readout scanning period to the output portion;
- driving the vertical CCDs during a vertical high-speed scanning period with vertical high-speed scanning pulses having a frequency higher than a frequency of the vertical readout scanning pulses to transfer the charges stored in the pixels of the extra-scanning pixel area to the horizontal CCD; and
- holding the horizontal CCD in an undriven state during an entirety of the vertical high-speed scanning period to cause at least a portion of the charges transferred by the vertical CCDs during the vertical high-speed scanning period to overflow the horizontal CCD and be swept into the output portion.
- 8. A method according to claim 7, further comprising the step of holding the output portion in a reset state during the entirety of the vertical high-speed scanning period.
- 9. A method according to claim 7, further comprising the step of driving the horizontal CCD during a horizontal high-speed scanning period subsequent to the vertical high-speed scanning period with horizontal high-speed scanning pulses having a frequency higher than a frequency of the horizontal readout scanning pulses to transfer any remaining portion of the charges transferred by the vertical CCDs during the vertical high-speed scanning period to the output portion.
- 10. A method according to claim 9, further comprising the step of holding the output portion in a reset state during the entirety of the vertical high-speed scanning period.
- 11. A method according to claim 7, wherein the step of holding the horizontal CCD in an undriven state during an entirety of the vertical high-speed scanning period includes maintaining a potential of the horizontal CCD higher than a potential of the output portion during the entirety of the vertical high-speed scanning period, thereby causing at least a portion of the charges transferred by the vertical CCDs during the vertical high-speed scanning period to overflow the horizontal CCD and be swept into the output portion.
- 12. A method according to claim 11, further comprising the step of holding the output portion in a reset state during the entirety of the vertical high-speed scanning period.
