Claims
- 1. In a method of forming an optic device having regions of differing dominant ferroelectric polarizations within a solid state body for frequency conversion of electromagnetic radiation, comprising the steps of altering the composition of said body at one of said regions to be different than the composition of said body at another of said regions, and applying an electric field to said body having a potential value selected to form desired dominant ferroelectric polarizations in said altered composition.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said electric field is applied is applied to said body by contacting differing surfaces of said body with electrodes and applying differing potential values to the electrodes respectively at said differing surfaces.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein said integrated optic device is a sum or difference-frequency device.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein said integrated optic device is a second harmonic frequency generator.
- 5. The method of claim 4 wherein said step of forming regions includes the step of forming regions of different dominant electric polarization having respective lengths generally equal to an odd integer multiple of a coherence length of an intended nonlinear interaction.
- 6. A method of forming a region of a desired electrical polarization within a solid body of crystalline lithium tantalate comprising, the step of contacting said lithium tantalate body with electrodes and applying differing potential values to selected ones of said electrodes, said electrodes being selected relative to the material of said solid state body and a potential to be applied thereto, to inhibit diffusion of material from said electrodes into said body when potential is applied to said electrodes.
- 7. The method of claim 6 wherein the electrodes selected for one of said values are chrome covered with gold and the electrodes selected for the other of said values are gold.
- 8. The method of claim 6 further including the step of altering the composition of said body at said region.
- 9. A method of forming a region of a selected electrical polarization within a solid state body being a composition, comprising contacting differing surfaces of said body with electrodes and applying different potential values to electrodes positioned respectively at said differing surfaces.
- 10. The method of claim 9 wherein said body is of crystalline lithium tantalate.
- 11. The method of claim 9 further including the step of selecting the material or materials of said electrodes relative to the material of said solid state body and the potential intended to be applied thereto to inhibit diffusion of said electrode materials into said body when potential is applied to said electrodes.
- 12. The method of claim 9 further including the step of altering the composition of said body at said region.
