Claims
- 1. A method of fabricating a vapor-liquid grid element for use in a vapor-liquid contact apparatus, which method comprises:
- (a) providing a thin, narrow, strip material of defined length and width;
- (b) making a plurality of generally long, longitudinal cuts in the strip material, with short, supporting, noncut rib sections therebetween, and making generally short, transverse cuts at each end of the longitudinal cuts, to form a plurality of cut sections in the strip material;
- (c) bending the strip material, along each side of the cut section generally parallel to the longitudinal cut and to each end of the transverse cuts in each cut section, generally outwardly on either side of the strip material, to form a pair of outward vane elements extending from each cut section;
- (d) making a plurality of open slots extending generally inwardly a short distance from each edge of the strip material in the area of the noncut rib section; and
- (e) inserting thin, upright, connector elements in the open slots of the grid elements, to hold the grid elements in a spaced relationship and to form a vapor-liquid contact grid having a plurality of layers of grid elements spaced apart by connector elements.
- 2. The method of claim 1 which includes making a plurality of generally "I"-shaped cuts in the strip material, to form "I"-shaped cut sections.
- 3. The method of claim 1 which includes making a plurality of longitudinal, generally serrated cuts in the strip material.
- 4. The method of claim 3 which includes making a plurality of two, parallel, longitudinal, generally serrated cuts in the strip material.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the transverse cuts at each end of the cut sections are substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal cuts.
- 6. The method of claim 1 which includes bending the strip material to form outwardly and inwardly extending vane elements having a curved shape.
- 7. The method of claim 1 which includes bending the strip material to form a pair of outwardly and inwardly extending vane elements in each cut section extending on either side of the strip material.
- 8. The method of claim 1 which includes bending the strip material to form a pair of outwardly and inwardly extending vane elements, one on each side of the strip material in each cut section, and the vane elements alternating along the length of the strip material.
- 9. The method of claim 1 wherein the open slots extend in alternating sequence along the one and the other edges of the strip material.
- 10. The method of claim 1 which includes cutting and bending the strip material, in a single-step operation, employing a die press, to form vane elements with curved, outwardly extending surfaces.
- 11. The method of claim 10 which includes making the open slots in a single-step operation with a die press.
- 12. The method of claim 9 which includes inserting connector elements in open slots along each edge of the strip material to form a multiple-layer vapor-liquid grid composed of a plurality of alternating layers of spaced apart connector elements and strip material having vane elements.
- 13. A method of fabricating a vapor-liquid grid element for use in a vapor-liquid contact apparatus, which method comprises:
- (a) providing a thin, narrow, strip material of defined length and width;
- (b) making a plurality of generally long, longitudinal and short, transverse cuts at each end in the general shape of an "I" centrally in the strip material, with short, supporting, noncut rib sections therebetween, to form an "I"-shaped cut section in the strip material;
- (c) bending the strip material, along each side of the cut sections parallel to the longitudinal cuts and to each end of the transverse cuts, generally outwardly of the strip material, to form a pair of vane elements from each cut section, one vane element extending to one side and the other vane element extending to the other side of the strip material, and each pair of vane elements along the strip material alternating in position, the vane elements having a generally curved surface;
- (d) making a plurality of open slots extending generally perpendicular and inwardly a short distance from each edge of the strip material in the area of the noncut rib sections, the open slots alternating from one to the other edges along the length of the strip material; and
- (e) inserting thin, upright, connector elements in the open slots of the grid elements, to hold the grid elements in a spaced relationship and to form a vapor-liquid contact grid having a plurality of layers of grid elements spaced apart by connector elements.
