Claims
- 1. A process for controlling the placement of a polymer composition into a moving porous web having a plurality of structural elements with interstitial spaces therebetween comprising:
- applying tension to the moving porous web within a processing zone;
- applying a shear-thinnable polymer composition onto a surface of the tensioned web;
- shear thinning the polymer composition with at least one knife blade mounted transversely to the moving web to substantially reduce the viscosity of the polymer composition and selectively place it into the tensioned web encapsulating at least some of the structural elements;
- sensing a plurality of parameters selected from the group consisting of: the tension at one or more places within the processing zone, the positioning of said knife blade relative to the moving web, the micro porosity of the moving web before and after the processing zone, the placement of an internal layer of polymer within said web, the web density before and after the processing zone, the elemental analysis of the web after the processing zone, and the amount of polymer composition applied to the moving web; and
- controlling one or more of said shear thinning, said tension applying, and said polymer applying in response to said parameter sensing.
- 2. A process for controlling the placement of a polymer composition into a moving porous web having a plurality of structural elements with interstitial spaces therebetween comprising:
- applying tension to the moving porous web within a processing zone;
- applying a shear-thinnable polymer composition onto a surface of the tensioned web;
- shear thinning the polymer composition with at least one knife blade mounted transversely to the moving web to substantially reduce the viscosity of the polymer composition and selectively place it into the tensioned web encapsulating at least some of the structural elements;
- sensing a plurality of parameters selected from the group consisting of: the tension at one or more places within the processing zone, the positioning of said knife blade relative to the moving web, the micro porosity of the moving web before and after the processing zone, the placement of an internal layer of polymer within said web, the web density before and after the processing zone, the elemental analysis of the web after the processing zone, and the amount of polymer composition applied to the moving web;
- comparing the sensed parameters against a preset range of parameters for a predetermined product; and
- controlling the parameters outside of the preset range to make the predetermined product having parameters within the preset range.
- 3. A process as set forth in claim 1 including curing the polymer composition within the porous web.
- 4. A process set forth in claim 3 including the step of supporting the moving web during curing so that there is substantially no transverse or longitudinal tension on said web.
- 5. A process for controlling the placement of a polymer composition into a moving porous web having a plurality of structural elements with interstitial spaces therebetween comprising:
- applying tension to the moving porous web within said processing zone;
- applying a shear-thinnable polymer composition onto a surface of the tensioned web;
- shear thinning the polymer composition to substantially reduce the viscosity of the polymer composition and selectively place it into the tensioned web encapsulating at least some of the structural elements;
- curing the treated web after the processing zone;
- supporting the web during curing so that there is substantially no transverse or longitudinal tension on said web;
- measuring the micro porosity of the web before and after the processing zone;
- comparing the measurements with a preset range of measurements; and
- controlling one or more of the tension of the web, the shear fining of the polymer composition and the application of the polymer composition to maintain the treated web within the preset range of measurements.
- 6. A process for controlling the placement of a polymer composition into a moving porous web having a plurality of structural elements with interstitial spaces therebetween comprising:
- applying tension to the moving porous web within said processing zone;
- applying a shear-thinnable polymer composition onto a surface of the tensioned web;
- shear thinning the polymer composition to substantially reduce the viscosity of the polymer composition and selectively place it into the tensioned web encapsulating at least some of the structural elements;
- curing the treated web after the processing zone;
- supporting the web during curing so that there Is substantially no transverse or longitudinal tension on said web;
- monitoring the amount of polymer composition applied to the moving web; and
- controlling the application of polymer to said web in response to said monitoring.
- 7. A process for controlling the placement of a polymer composition into a moving porous web having a plurality of structural elements with interstitial spaces therebetween comprising:
- applying tension to the moving porous web within said processing zone;
- applying a shear-thinnable polymer composition onto a surface of the tensioned web;
- shear thinning the polymer composition to substantially reduce the viscosity of the polymer composition and selectively place it into the tensioned web encapsulating at least some of the structural elements;
- curing the treated web after the processing zone;
- supporting the web during curing so that there is substantially no transverse or longitudinal tension on said web;
- measuring the density of the web before and after the processing zone;
- comparing the measurements with a preset range of measurements; and
- controlling one or more of the tension of the web, the shear thinning of the polymer composition, and the application of the polymer composition to maintain the treated web within the preset range of measurements.
- 8. A process for controlling the placement of a polymer composition into a moving porous web having a plurality of structural elements with interstitial spaces therebetween comprising:
- applying tension to the moving porous web within said processing zone;
- applying a shear-thinnable polymer composition onto a surface of the tensioned web;
- shear thinning the polymer composition to substantially reduce the viscosity of the polymer composition and selectively place it into the tensioned web encapsulating at least some of the structural elements;
- curing the treated web after the processing zone;
- supporting the web during curing so that there is substantially no transverse or longitudinal tension on said web;
- analyzing the elements present on the untreated surface of the web after curing;
- comparing the analysis of certain elements with a preset range of values for said certain elements; and
- controlling one or more of the tension of the web, the shear thinning of the polymer composition, and the application of the polymer composition to maintain the treated web within the preset range of values.
- 9. A process for controlling the placement of a polymer composition into a moving porous web having a plurality of structural elements with interstitial spaces therebetween comprising:
- applying tension to the moving porous web within said processing zone;
- applying a shear-thinnable polymer composition onto a surface of the tensioned web;
- shear thinning the polymer composition to substantially reduce the viscosity of the polymer composition and selectively place it into the tensioned web encapsulating at least some of the structural elements and forming an internal layer of polymer composition within said web;
- curing the treated web after the processing zone;
- supporting the web doting curing so that there is substantially no transverse or longitudinal tension on said web;
- measuring the placement of the internal layer within said web;
- comparing the measurement with a preset range of measurements; and
- controlling one or more of the tension of said web, the shear thinning of said polymer composition and the application of the polymer composition to maintain the treated web within the preset range of measurements.
- 10. A process for controlling the placement of a polymer composition into a moving porous web having a plurality of structural elements with interstitial spaces therebetween comprising:
- applying tension to the moving porous web within said processing zone;
- applying a shear-thinnable polymer composition onto a surface of the tensioned web;
- shear thinning the polymer composition to substantially reduce the viscosity of the polymer composition and selectively place it into the tensioned web encapsulating at least some of the structural elements;
- curing the treated web after the processing zone;
- supporting the web during curing so that there is substantially no transverse or longitudinal tension on said web;
- sensing a plurality of parameters selected from the group consisting of the tension at one or more places within the processing zone, the micro porosity of the moving web before and after the processing zone, the placement of an internal layer of polymer within said web, the web density before and after the processing zone, the elemental analysis of the web after the processing zone, and the amount of polymer composition applied to the moving web; and
- comparing the sensed parameters against a preset range of parameters for a predetermined product; and
- controlling the parameters outside of the preset range to make the predetermined product having parameters within the preset range.
