Claims
- 1. A method of forming a tamper-resistant brake actuator having a flange case member and a head member by permanently securing said members together, said method comprising the following steps:
- (1) forming an annular rim portion on each of said members, said annular rim portions each extending generally radially outwardly from a body portion of said members;
- (2) disposing a power spring in said body portion of said head member;
- (3) disposing a push rod in said flange case body portion, said push rod having a portion extending through an opening in said flange case;
- (4) positioning a radial outer portion of a flexible diaphragm on said annular rim portion of one of said members and between said push rod and said power spring, then placing said rim portion of the other of said members over said radial outer portion of said flexible diaphragm, such that said members are coaxially aligned and define an interior space in said body portions receiving said power spring and said diaphragm, and said rim portions retaining said diaphragm therebetween; and
- (5) deforming said annular rim portion of one of said members beyond its elastic limit axially beyond the other of said rim portions, and then radially inwardly such that it overlies a portion of said other of said rim portions, thereby securing said rim portions and permanently retaining said power spring, wherein to separate said members and release said power spring, said one of said rim portions must be deformed beyond its elastic limit.
- 2. The method as defined in claim 1, wherein said power spring biases said diaphragm within said interior space of said flange case.
- 3. The method as defined in claim 1, including forming said rim portions to define an annular space therebetween having a reduced opening into said interior space defined by said body portions entrapping said flexible diaphragm outer portion in said annular space.
- 4. The method of forming a tamper-resistant brake actuator as defined in claim 3, including forming an annular rim on said flange case having a first portion extending generally radially outwardly from said body portion and a second portion extending axially away from said first portion to define said annular space having a reduced opening when said annular rim of said head is located over said flange case rim.
- 5. A method of forming a tamper-resistant brake actuator having a flange case, a brake actuator head, a power spring and a flexible diaphragm, said power spring being compressed at periods during operation of said brake actuator such that said spring exerts a substantial force on said head, said method comprising the following steps:
- (1) forming annular rim portions on said flange case and said head, said rim portions extending generally radially outwardly from a body portion and said rim portions formed to define a restricted opening to said body portions when located in mating coaxial relation;
- (2) disposing a power spring located on a retainer member in said brake actuator head body portion;
- (3) caging said power spring within said brake actuator head body portion by inserting a caging member an opening in said brake actuator head into said retainer member and compressing said spring;
- (4) positioning a radial outer portion of said flexible diaphragm on one of said rim portions, then placing said rim portions together to entrap said diaphragm outer portion therebetween and coaxially aligning said body portions of said flange case and said brake actuator head to define an interior space receiving said power spring and said diaphragm;
- (5) deforming said annular rim of said head beyond its elastic limit axially beyond said flange case rim and into locking engagement therewith entrapping said power spring and requiring permanent deformation of said brake actuator head to remove said head from said flange case and release said power spring; and
- (6) releasing said power spring within said brake actuator head.
- 6. The method of forming a tamper-resistant brake assembly as defined in claim 5, wherein said power spring is temporary compressed and retained in said head by threading a release bolt to compress said power spring.
- 7. The method of forming a tamper-resistant brake assembly as defined in claim 5, wherein said method includes deforming said rim portion of said brake actuator head radially inwardly behind said flange case rim portion forming a U-shape rim on said brake actuator head, permanently securing said head to said flange case.
- 8. A method of forming a tamper-resistant fluid operated brake actuator by securing a brake actuator head to a brake actuator flange case, wherein the brake actuator is of the type having a power spring housed within the head, the power spring being in a compressed state in one mode of operation, and exerting a force on the head during periods of compression tending to separate the head from the flange case, the method comprising the steps of:
- (1) forming a annular flange on said flange casing, said annular flange having a first portion extending generally radially outwardly from a body of said flange case and a second portion extending axially away from said first portion, a diaphragm channel being defined in part by said first and second portions;
- (2) disposing a power spring in said brake actuator head;
- (3) disposing a diaphragm in said flange casing and a radial portion of said diaphragm in said diaphragm channel; and
- (4) forming an integral retainer member on said head and deforming said integral retainer member beyond its elastic limit to secure said head to said flange case by first deforming said retainer member such that it extends radially outwardly away from said head and overlies said diaphragm channel, entrapping said radial portion of said diaphragm in said channel, next deforming said retainer member axially to overlie said second portion of said annular flange, and then deforming said retainer member radially inwardly to overlie at least part of said first portion of said annular flange to tightly secure said head to said flange case, wherein to remove said head from said flange case said retainer member must be deformed beyond its elastic limit.
- 9. A method as recited in claim 8, wherein said power spring is held by a caging member during step (3), and said power spring is released from said caging member after step (3).
