Claims
- 1. A method of forming collar stays and inserting collar stays into partially completed shirt collars having at least two outer plies of material forming a pair of generally triangular stay-receiving pointed portions, comprising the steps of moving a length of continuous collar stay material along its length from a supply along a path, and while in the path the steps of cutting the material into collar stay segments, applying a spot of adhesive to a predetermined portion of each of the segments, moving alternate ones of the segments to a position adjacent one portion of a collar template having a pair of pointed end portions and moving the other alternate ones of the segments to a position adjacent the other portion of the collar template, moving the segments along the surface of the template with the adhesive facing away from the template until the segments each overlie the pointed end portions of the template, placing the stay-receiving pointed portions of the collar over the pointed end portions of the template, pressing the collar against the adhesive on the segments to cause the segments to adhere to the collar, and removing the collar with its segments from the template.
- 2. The method of claim 1 and wherein the step of cutting the material into collar stay segments comprises forming the segments with one pointed end and with one rounded end, and wherein the step of applying adhesive to the segments comprises applying adhesive to the segments adjacent the pointed ends of the segments, and wherein the step of moving the segments along the surface of the template until the segments each overlie the pointed end portions of the template comprises aligning the pointed ends of the segments with pointed end portions of the template.
- 3. The method of claim 1 and wherein the step of moving a length of material along its length from a supply along a path comprises pulling the length of material from a reel of material, and further including the step of heating the length of material to reduce the curl of the material.
- 4. The method of claim 1 and wherein the step of applying adhesive to the segments comprises advancing a tape with adhesive carried thereby across the segments at a predetermined location in the path and urging the tape into contact with the segments to transfer the adhesive form the tape to the segments.
- 5. A method of inserting a pair of collar stays having pointed ends into partially completed collars having at least two outer plies of material forming a pair of generally triangular stay-receiving pointed portions, comprising the steps of applying a spot of adhesive to a predetermined portion of one surface of each of the collar stays, moving the pair of collar stays along the surface of a collar template having pointed end portions with the adhesive facing away from the surface of the template and with the pointed ends of the stays extending in their directions of movement until the pointed ends of the collar stays are in registration with the pointed portions of the collar template, placing the stay-receiving pointed portions of the collar over the pointed end portions of the template, pressing the collar against the collar stays, and removing the collar with the collar stays inside the collar from the template.
