Claims
- 1. A method of producing hydrogen by electrolysis of a water base electrolyte using oxidation of ungraphitized carbon particles in said solution as an input energy source, said method comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing an electrolysis cell with a first electrode and a second electrode;
- (b) providing a gas collecting chamber in said cell and adjacent each of said electrodes;
- (c) providing a water base electrolyte in said cell and communicated with both said first and second electrodes;
- (d) periodically adding water to said electrolyte;
- (e) periodically adding oxidizable ungraphitized carbon particles to said electrolyte adjacent at least said first electrode;
- (f) applying a direct current across said electrodes at a voltage at least as great as said decomposition voltage of said electrolyte;
- (g) collecting hydrogen in said chamber adjacent said second electrode; and,
- (h) collecting an oxide gas of carbon in said chamber adjacent said first electrode.
- 2. The method as defined in claim 1 wherein there is included the additional step of:
- (i) mechanically stirring said carbon particles in said electrolyte at least adjacent said first electrode to maintain said carbon particles in suspension in said electrolyte.
- 3. The method as defined in claim 1 wherein said water base electrolyte includes a halogen based acid whereby a halogen gas is formed adjacent said first electrode to free oxygen from the water of said electrolyte for oxidation of said ungraphitized carbon particles.
