FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention is directed to furniture and more particularly to a method of providing furniture such as a chair with a three dimensional, two color design on the front or back of the chair.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Heretofore if a colored design were to be added to furniture paint or decals would be required. The life of such designs would be short especially in areas which wear during use of the furniture. There is a need for providing a design to furniture which will last during the life of the furniture.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention provides a method of providing a multi-color, 3 dimensional, design for furniture, such as a chair, which will last the life of the chair.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
A better understanding of the present invention can be had upon reference to the photos and figures in which;
FIG. 1 illustrates a chair constructed to incorporate designs provided by using the method of the present invention;
FIG. 2 is fragmentary cross sectional view illustrating the construction of a two color, 3 dimensional, design incorporated in a furniture section such as the back of a chair of the type shown in FIG. 1 and;
FIG. 3 is a view similar to FIG. 2, but illustrating the construction of a three color design
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS
FIG. 1 shows a chair incorporating a design in the back of the chair 10 which is produced by utilizing the method of the present invention. Preferably the front side 12 and the back side 14 (FIGS. 2 and 3) of a back 16 of the chair 10 is the same color and a design 18 is formed in front side 12 the chair 10 of another color. The back 16 of the chair 10 is formed of 3 ply plastic material preferably HDPE with the outside layers of the same color and inner layer of a different color.
The construction is made clearer by looking at FIG. 2 which shows in cross section a slat 20 used to form the back 16 of the chair 10 shown in the FIG. 1. The slat 20 is preferably constructed of three layers of HDPE (High Density Polyethylene). Layer A and Layer C are preferably of the same color while Layer B is of a different color. Layers A and C are preferably 1/16th of an inch in thickness while Layer B is between ½ inch and ¾ inch thick. To form a design a router or the like is used to cut away portions of Layer A as shown at 22 to expose a portion of Layer B and to form the two colors, 3 dimensional design 18. The design is formed by the colors of the surface of layers and the exposed surface of layer B.
FIG. 3 illustrates forming a piece of furniture or the like 110 with a three color design incorporated in the furniture 110. A fourth layer, Layer D, is disposed between Layers B and C. Layer C is preferably of a different color than the other layers. A router is used to cut away portions of Layer A and of Layer B to expose portions of Layer B and Layer D at 24 to expose two colors to provide a three color design 118. The three color design is formed by the surface of layer A, the surface of layer B and if desired the surface of layer D.
The design 18 is indicated as “indicia” on the drawings and can be in the form of any 2 or 3 color design such as company logos and the like.
It should be apparent that although the present invention has been described as including the back of a chair being formed of individual slats and the design being incorporated in the slats the design could as well be formed in a sheet of material and the sheet used to form other pieces of furniture.
It should also be apparent that other modifications could be made as well without departing from the spirit of the invention.
