Claims
- 1. A method of harvesting sugar or red beets comprising the steps of traversing a field of row-planted beets in one direction, removing the beets from certain of the rows in said field while traveling in said one direction, directing the removed beets to one side of the harvester, elevating the beets at said one side of the harvester to a predetermined height, shifting the elevated beets at generally said predetermined height to a location intermediate said one side and the opposite side of said harvester and shifting at least some of said elevated beets from said intermediate location to said opposite side for discharge into a transport vehicle adjacent said opposite side.
- 2. A method of harvesting beets in accordance with claim 1 including the step of directing at least some of said elevated beets from said intermediate location to a lower location for storage aboard said harvester.
- 3. A method of harvesting beets in accordance with claim 2 including the steps of re-directing said stored beets to said one side of the harvester, re-elevating said stored beets to said predetermined height, and shifting the re-elevated beets from said one side to said opposite side for discharge into a transport vehicle adjacent said opposite side.
- 4. A method of harvesting beets in accordance with claim 2 in which the harvester has a tank at said lower location into which said elevated beets are directed from said intermediate location for storage.
- 5. A method of harvesting beets in accordance with claim 4 in which said tank extends tranversely from a location near said one side to a location near said opposite side, and said step of directing at least some of said elevated beets from said intermediate location to said lower location directs more beets toward said opposite side than toward said one side.
- 6. A method of harvesting beets in accordance with claim 3 including the step of intermittently positioning a transport vehicle adjacent said opposite side to receive at least some of said re-elevated beets.
- 7. A method of harvesting beets in accordance with claim 6 including the step of causing said transport vehicle to trail behind said harvester when not adjacent said opposite side.
- 8. A method of harvesting beets in accordance with claim 7 in which said intermittently positioning and trailing steps are performed during a first traverse of said field.
- 9. A method of harvesting beets in accordance with claim 8 including the step of shifting at least some of said elevated beets from said intermediate location to said opposite side during a second traverse of said field in a direction opposite to said one direction.
- 10. A method of harvesting beets in accordance with claim 9 including the step of causing said transport vehicle to travel adjacent said opposite side during the second traverse of said field, and discharging said elevated beets into said transport vehicle as said harvester traverses the field in said second direction.
- 11. A method of harvesting beets in accordance with claim 10 in which said certain number of rows from which beets are removed span a width at least as wide as the transport vehicle traveling adjacent said opposite side during said second traverse, said vehicle traveling over the rows from which beets were removed during the first traverse.
- 12. A method of harvesting sugar or red beets comprising the steps of removing beets from the soil during a first pass of a harvester across a beet field, elevating the removed beets to a given height at one side of the harvester, shifting the elevated beets part way toward the opposite side of the harvester, directing at least some of the beets at the elevated height to a lower height for temporary storage on the harvester, displacing at least some of said beets from storage and re-elevating said displaced beets at said one side to said given height, shifting the re-elevated beets at substantially said given height from said one side to a location residing somewhat beyond the opposite side of the harvester, and discharging said re-elevated beets into a transport vehicle adjacent said opposite side.
- 13. A method of harvesting beets in accordance with claim 12 including the steps of intermittently directing additional elevated beets to said lower height for temporary storage, repeatedly displacing at least some of said additional beets from storage and repeatedly re-elevating said additional displaced beets to said given height at said one side, and repeatedly shifting said additional elevated beets to said location residing somewhat beyond the opposite side of the harvester, and repeatedly discharging said additional re-elevated beets into a transport vehicle adjacent said opposite side until the harvester has completed its first pass across the sugar beet field.
- 14. A method of harvesting beets in accordance with claim 13 including the steps of removing a further quantity of beets from the field during a second pass of the harvester across the field in a reverse direction from said first pass, elevating said further quantity of beets to said given height at said one side, shifting said further quantity of beets at substantially said height to said location residing somewhat beyond the opposite side of the harvester, and discharging said further quantity of beets into a transport vehicle traveling alongside said opposite side.
- 15. A method of harvesting beets in accordance with claim 14 in which said transport vehicle during said second pass over the field traverses a path where the beets were removed during said first pass.
- 16. A method of harvesting sugar or red beets comprising the steps of removing beets from the soil with a harvester as the harvester passes across a beet field, elevating the removed beets only at one side of the harvester to a given height at said one side, and shifting at least some of the elevated beets at generally said given height to a location somewhat beyond the opposite side of said harvester.
- 17. A method of harvesting beets in accordance with claim 16 including the steps of lowering at least some of the elevated beets from a location intermediate the sides of said harvester, and re-elevating at least some of the lowered beets only at said one side, and shifting at least some of the re-elevated beets at generally said given height to said location somewhat beyond the opposite side of said harvester.
- 18. A method of harvesting beets in accordance with claim 16 including the step of preventing the elevation of any beets at said opposite side.
