Claims
- 1. A method of improving the properties of a reverse osmosis membrane having a polyamide discriminating layer containing a plurality of residual aromatic primary amine groups, comprising treating the polyamide discriminating layer with an aqueous solution of a reagent which reacts with primary amine groups to form diazonium salt groups or derivatives of diazonium salt groups.
- 2. The method as described in claim 1 further comprising treating the membrane with a wetting agent prior to treatment with the reagent.
- 3. The method as described in claim 1 wherein the aqueous solution includes a wetting agent.
- 4. The method as described in claim 1 wherein the polyamide is derived from an aromatic or cycloaliphatic compound bearing at least two acyl halide groups and a phenylenediamine.
- 5. The method as described in claim 4 wherein the compound bearing at least two acyl halide groups is trimesoyl halide, isophthaloyl halide, terephthaloyl halide or mixtures thereof.
- 6. The method as described in claim 5 wherein the acyl halide compound consists of at least 50 mole percent trimesoyl chloride.
- 7. The method as described in claim 6 wherein the acyl halide compound is cyclohexane-1,3,5-tricarbonyl chloride.
- 8. The method as described in claim 1 wherein the polyamide discriminating layer is treated with nitrous acid or a precursor which forms nitrous acid during treatment of the membrane.
- 9. The method as described in claim 8 wherein the polyamide is treated with nitrous acid at a temperature in the range from about 0.degree. to about 30.degree. C.
- 10. The method as described in claim 9 wherein the aqueous solution contains from about 0.01 to about 1 percent nitrous acid by weight.
- 11. The method as described in claim 1 wherein the reagent is nitrous acid or a precursor which forms nitrous acid during treatment of the membrane and the water flux of the treated membrane at a pressure of 200 psi and a temperature of 25.degree. C. using a 0.2 weight percent aqueous NaCl solution is at least 10 percent greater than the water flux of the same membrane at these conditions prior to treatment.
