Claims
- 1. A method of electrically stimulating a patient by controlling the average energy in a train of electrical pulses within a range tolerable to the patient to stimulate deep afferent nerves and cause the release of opiates to suppress pain in the patient comprising: supplying a train of electrical pulses at a repetition rate, selectively increasing and decreasing the repetitive rate of said electrical pulses, varying the pulse rate range, pulse width and pulse amplitude of said electrical pulses over a predetermined range simultaneously with an increase or decrease in the repetitive rate of said electrical pulses, said width and amplitude of said electrical pulses being decreased when the repetitive rate of said electrical pulses is increased and said width and amplitude of said electrical pulses being increased when the repetitive rate of said electrical pulses is decreased, cyclically altering the limits of said range of pulse widths and amplitudes, cyclically altering the repetitive rate of said electrical pulses between first and second values, and applying said electrical pulses to a patient at levels sufficient to stimulate deep afferent nerves and cause the release of opiates to suppress pain.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein: the train of electrical pulses is supplied at a manually adjustable rate range.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein: the width of the pulses is varied simultaneously with the varying of the amplitude of the pulses.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein: the pulse repetition rate range is between 0 and about 40 percent and the pulse width range is between 0 and about 60 percent.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein: the period of the cycle of the repetition rate of the electrical pulses is about 1 second.
- 6. The method of claim 5 wherein: the pulse rate change is between 0 and about 40 percent and the pulse width change is between 0 and about 60 percent.
- 7. A method of stimulating a patient with electrical pulses by controlling the average energy of the pulses at levels sufficient to stimulate deep afferent nerves and cause the release of the opiates to suppress pain in the patient comprising: supplying a train of electrical pulses at a repetition rate, selectively increasing and decreasing the repetition rate of said electrical pulses, counteracting the energy increase associated with an increase in repetition rate of the electrical pulses by simultaneously decreasing the width and amplitude of the electrical pulses and modulating the pulse rate range to reduce the average energy in said train of electrical pulses, counteracting the energy decrease associated with a decrease in repetition rate of the electrical pulses by simultaneously increasing the width and amplitude of the electrical pulses and modulating the pulse rate range, and applying said pulses to a patient at levels sufficient to stimulate deep afferent nerves and cause the release of opiates to suppress pain.
- 8. The method of claim 7 including: causing cyclic alteration of the limits of said predetermined range of pulse widths and causing cyclic alteration of the repetition rate of the train of electrical pulses between selected first and second values.
- 9. The method of claim 7 wherein: the train of electrical pulses is supplied at a manually adjustable rate range.
- 10. A method of stimulating a patient with electrical pulses by controlling the average energy of the pulses at levels sufficient to stimulate deep afferent nerves and cause the release of opiates to suppress pain in the patient comprising: supplying a train of electrical pulses at a repetition rate, selectively increasing and decreasing the repetitive rate of said electrical pulses, varying the pulse rate range, pulse width and pulse amplitude of said electrical pulses over a predetermined range simultaneously with an increase or decrease in the repetitive rate of said electrical pulses, said width and amplitude of said electrical pulses being decreased when the repetitive rate of said electrical pulses is increased and said width and amplitude of said electrical pulses being increased when the repetitive rate of said electrical pulses is decreased, and applying said pulses to a patient at levels sufficient to stimulate deep afferent nerves and cause the release of opiates to suppress pain.
- 11. The method of claim 10 including: causing cyclic alteration of the limits of said predetermined range of the widths of said electrical pulses.
- 12. The method of claim 10 wherein: the train of electrical pulses is supplied at a manually adjustable rate range.
- 13. The method of claim 10 wherein: the pulse repetition rate range is between 0 and about 40 percent and the pulse width range is between 0 and about 60 percent.
