Claims
- 1. A method of improving the antioxidant status of an infant by administering to said infant a mixture of natural tocopherols comprising at least one source of γ-tocopherol and at least one source of α-tocopherol wherein the γ-tocopherol to α-tocopherol ratio is from about 1:2 to about 10:1.
- 2. The method according to claim 1 wherein said source of γ-tocopherol comprises at least one oil rich in γ-tocopherol.
- 3. The method according to claim 2 wherein said oil rich in γ-tocopherol is selected from the group consisting of canola oil, safflower oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, cottonseed oil, palm oil, peanut oil, sesame oil, soybean oil, walnut oil, wheat germ oil, and mixtures thereof.
- 4. The method according to claim 1 wherein said γ-tocopherol to α-tocopherol ratio comprises α-tocopherol acetate and at least one oil rich in γ-tocopherol selected from the group consisting of canola oil, safflower oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, cottonseed oil, palm oil, peanut oil, sesame oil, soybean oil, walnut oil, wheat germ oil, and mixtures thereof.
- 5. The method according to claim 1 wherein said source of α-tocopherol comprises at least one oil rich in α-tocopherol.
- 6. The method according to claim 5 wherein said oil rich in α-tocopherol is selected from the group consisting of canola oil, corn oil, cottonseed oil, olive oil, palm oil, palm kernel, peanut oil, safflower oil, sesame oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, walnut oil, wheat germ oil, cod liver oil, herring oil, menhaden oil, and mixtures thereof.
- 7. The method of claim 1 in which said mixture of natural tocopherols is administered in an oral dosage form selected from the group consisting of chewable tablet, quick dissolve tablet, an effervescent tablet, a hard gelatin capsule, a soft gelatin capsule, reconstitutable particles, microparticles, a suspension, an elixir, a caplet, a fortified food, pudding, yogurts, gelatin, cereal, adult nutritionals, infant nutritionals and combinations thereof.
- 8. A method for improving antioxidant status of infants by administrating to said infant an infant formula wherein said infant formula comprises:
a) a source of protein, b) a source of carbohydrate, and c) a source of fat, wherein said fat comprises at least one oil rich in γ-tocopherol selected from the group consisting of canola oil, corn oil, cottonseed oil, palm oil, peanut oil, safflower oil, sesame oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, walnut oil, wheat germ oil, and mixtures thereof, and d) at least one source of α-tocopherol wherein the γ-tocopherol to α-tocopherol ratio of said infant formula is from about 1:2 to about 10:1.
- 9. A supplement for lactating women which comprises a lactating relevant amount of vitamin E, wherein said vitamin E comprises at least one source of γ-tocopherol and at least one source of α-tocopherol and wherein said γ-tocopherol to α-tocopherol ratio is from about 1:2 to about 10:1.
- 10. The lactating supplement according to claim 9 which further comprises a lactating relevant amount of at least on vitamin or mineral selected from the group consisting of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, vitamin D, fluoride, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, folate, vitamin B12, pantothenic acid, biotin, choline, vitamin A, vitamin K, boron, chromium, copper, iodine, iron, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, vanadium, zinc, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium and carotenoids.
- 11. The lactating supplement according to claim 9 in which said γ-tocopherol to α-tocopherol ratio is administered in an oral dosage form selected from the group consisting of chewable tablet, quick dissolve tablet, an effervescent tablet, a hard gelatin capsule, a soft gelatin capsule, reconstitutable particles, microparticles, a suspension, an elixir, a caplet, liquid and combinations thereof.
- 12. The lactating supplement according to claim 9 wherein said supplement is provided with indicia indicating a time period of use.
- 13. The lactating supplement according to claim 12, wherein said time period of use is prior to, during and after lactation.
- 14. The lactating supplement according to claim 9, wherein said composition is administered at least once during a twenty-four hour period of time.
- 15. A method for improving antioxidant status of breastfed infants by administrating to lactating women a nutritional comprising:
a. a source of protein, b. a source of carbohydrate, c. a source of fat, wherein said fat comprises at least one oil rich in γ-tocopherol selected from the group consisting of canola oil, corn oil, cottonseed oil, palm oil, peanut oil, safflower oil, sesame oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, walnut oil, wheat germ oil, and mixtures thereof, and d. at least one source of α-tocopherol wherein the γ-tocopherol to α-tocopherol ratio of said nutritional is from about 1:2 to about 10:1.
- 16. The method according to claim 12 wherein said nutritional further comprises a lactating relevant amount of at least on vitamin or mineral selected from the group consisting of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, vitamin D, fluoride, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, folate, vitamin B12, pantothenic acid, biotin, choline, vitamin A, vitamin K, boron, chromium, copper, iodine, iron, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, vanadium, zinc, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium and carotenoids.
- 17. A prenatal supplement which comprises a prenatal relevant amount of vitamin E, wherein said vitamin E comprises at least one source of γ-tocopherol and at least one source of α-tocopherol, and wherein said γ-tocopherol to α-tocopherol ratio is from about 1:2 to about 10:1.
- 18. The prenatal supplement according to claim 14 which further comprises a prenatal relevant amount of at least on vitamin or mineral selected from the group consisting of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, vitamin D, fluoride, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, folate, vitamin B12, pantothenic acid, biotin, choline, vitamin A, vitamin K, boron, chromium, copper, iodine, iron, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, vanadium, zinc, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium and carotenoids.
- 19. The prenatal supplement according to claim 14 in which said γ-tocopherol to α-tocopherol ratio is administered in an oral dosage form selected from the group consisting of chewable tablet, quick dissolve tablet, an effervescent tablet, a hard gelatin capsule, a soft gelatin capsule, reconstitutable particles, microparticles, a suspension, an elixir, a caplet, liquid and combinations thereof.
- 20. The prenatal supplement according to claim 14 wherein said supplement is provided with indicia indicating a time period of use.
- 21. The prenatal supplement according to claim 20, wherein said time period of use is prior to, during and after pregnancy.
- 22. The prenatal supplement according to claim 14, wherein said composition is administered at least once during a twenty-four hour period of time.
- 23. A method for improving antioxidant status of newborn infants by administrating to pregnant women a nutritional comprising:
a. a source of protein, b. source of carbohydrate, c. a source of fat, wherein said fat comprises at least one oil rich in γ-tocopherol selected from the group consisting of canola oil, corn oil, cottonseed oil, palm oil, peanut oil, safflower oil, sesame oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, walnut oil, wheat germ oil, and mixtures thereof, and d. at least one source of α-tocopherol wherein the γ-tocopherol to α-tocopherol ratio of said nutritional is from about 1:2 to about 10:1.
- 24. The method according to claim 17 wherein said nutritionl further comprises a prenatal relevant amount of at least on vitamin or mineral selected from the group consisting of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, vitamin D, fluoride, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, folate, vitamin B12, pantothenic acid, biotin, choline, vitamin A, vitamin K, boron, chromium, copper, iodine, iron, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, vanadium, zinc, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium and carotenoids.
- 25. A dietary supplement for administration to a lactating woman comprising:
a) a daily dose of about 2 mg of a vitamin B6 compound or derivative thereof; b) a daily dose of about 0.5 mg of a folic acid compound or derivative thereof C) a daily dose of about 1000 mg of a calcium compound or derivative thereof; d) a daily dose of about 5 mcg of a vitamin D compound or derivative thereof; e) a daily dose of about 120 mg of a vitamin C compound or derivative thereof; and f) a daily dose of about 19 mg of natural vitamin E, wherein the γ-tocopherol to α-tocopherol ratio of said vitamin E is from about 1:2 to about 10:1.
- 26. The dietary supplement according to claim 25 in which said dietary supplement is administered in an oral dosage form selected from the group consisting of chewable tablet, quick dissolve tablet, an effervescent tablet, a hard gelatin capsule, a soft gelatin capsule, reconstitutable particles, microparticles, a suspension, an elixir, a caplet, a liquid and combinations thereof.
- 27. A dietary supplement for administration to a pregnant woman comprising:
a.) a daily dose of about 27 mg of an iron compound or derivative thereof; b.) a daily dose of about 0.6 mg of a folic acid compound or derivative thereof; c.) a daily dose of about 1000 mg of a calcium compound or derivative thereof; d.) a daily dose of about 85 mg of a vitamin C compound or derivative thereof; and e.) a daily dose of about 15 mg of natural vitamin E, wherein the γ-tocopherol to α-tocopherol ratio of said vitamin E is from about 1:2 to about 10:1.
- 28. The dietary supplement according to claim 26 in which said dietary supplement is administered in an oral dosage form selected from the group consisting of chewable tablet, quick dissolve tablet, an effervescent tablet, a hard gelatin capsule, a soft gelatin capsule, reconstitutable particles, microparticles, a suspension, an elixir, a caplet, a liquid and combinations thereof.
- 29. A dietary supplement for administration to an infant comprising:
a) a daily dose of about 0.104 mg of beta-cryptoxanthan compound or derivative thereof; b) a daily dose of about 0.106 mg of lycopene compound or derivative thereof; c) a daily dose of about 0.044 mg of alpha-carotene compound or derivative thereof; d) a daily dose of about 0.178 mg of beta-carotene compound or derivative thereof; e) a daily dose of about 0.178 mg of lutein compound or derivative thereof; and f) a daily dose of about 4 mg of natural vitamin E, wherein the γ-tocopherol to α-tocopherol ratio of said vitamin E is from about 1:2 to about 10:1.
- 30. The dietary supplement according to claim 28 in which said dietary supplement is administered in an oral dosage form selected from the group consisting of reconstitutable particles, microparticles, a suspension, an elixir, a concentrated liquid and combinations thereof.
