Claims
- 1. A means of preventing fires resulting from the use of oxygen delivery systems in proximity to ignition sources and combustible materials, said means comprising the steps of
a) preparing a blend of oxygen and inert gas components of sufficient heat capacity to prevent ignition of combustibles in its region of release, b) disposing them within an oxygen delivery container with delivery apparatus, and c) administering said blend to a recipient through said delivery apparatus.
- 2. The blend of claim 1, wherein said oxygen is at a concentration greater than 21%.
- 3. The blend of claim 1, wherein said blend comprises oxygen and at least one of a list of perfluoropropane, perfluorobutane, perfluoroethane, perfluoromethane, nitrogen, sulfur hexafluoride and dodecafluoro-2-methylpetan-3-one.
- 4. The blend of claim 1, wherein said heat capacity is at least 40 cal/C.
- 5. The blend of claim 1, wherein said heat capacity is at least 50 cal/C.
- 6. The recipient of claim 1, wherein said recipient is one of a list of a surgery patient, hospitalized non-surgical patient, a recipient at a remote site from a medical care facility, a pilot, an aircraft passenger, a fireman, a miner, an astronaut, a seaman and a race car driver.
- 7. The delivery apparatus of claim 1, wherein said delivery apparatus is one of a list comprising an oxygen mask and a nasal canula.
- 8. The blend of claim 1, said blend comprising 31.2% to about 56.6% by volume oxygen, 0.0% to about 54.5% perfluoropropane, 0.0% to about 64.8% sulfur hexafluoride,, 0.0% to about 38.8% nitrogen, and 0.0% to about 10.0% dodecafluoro-2-methylpetan3-one.
- 9. The blend of claim 1, said blend having an oxygen/nitrogen/perfluoropropane/sulfur hexafluoride/dodecafluoro-2-methylpetan-3-one volumetric ratio of one from a list of 44.5/0/54.5/0/0, 52.0/0/48.0/0/0, 31.2/38.8/30.0/0/0, 39.0/31.0/30.0/0/0, 31.2/0/0/64.8/0, 41.5/0/0/58.5/0, 40.8/0/30.0/29.2/0, 48.0/0/30.0/22.0/0, 49.4/0/40.6/0/10.0, 56.6/0/33.4/0/10.0, 41.1/0/0/48.9/10.0, and 48.5/0/0/41.5/10.0.
- 10. A system for preventing fires resulting from the use of oxygen delivery systems in proximity to ignition sources and combustible materials, said system comprising
a) an oxygen delivery container with attached delivery apparatus, b) a blend of oxygen and inert gases of sufficient bulk heat capacity to prevent the ignition of combustibles in its region of release, disposed within said container, and c) a recipient for said blend through said delivery apparatus.
- 11. The blend of claim 10, wherein said oxygen is at a concentration greater than 21%.
- 12. The blend of claim 10, wherein said blend comprises oxygen and at least one of a list of perfluoropropane, perfluorobutane, perfluoroethane, perfluoromethane, nitrogen, sulfur hexafluoride and dodecafluoro-2-methylpetan-3-one.
- 13. The blend of claim 10, wherein said heat capacity is at least 40 cal/C.
- 14. The blend of claim 10, wherein said heat capacity is at least 50 cal/C.
- 15. The recipient of claim 10, wherein said recipient is one of a list of a surgery patient, hospitalized non-surgical patient, a recipient at a remote site from a medical care facility, a pilot, an aircraft passenger, a fireman, a miner, an astronaut, a seaman and a race car driver.
- 16. The delivery apparatus of claim 10, wherein said delivery apparatus is one of a list comprising an oxygen mask and a nasal canula.
- 17. The blend of claim 10, said blend comprising 31.2% to about 56.6% by volume oxygen, 0.0% to about 54.5% perfluoropropane, 0.0% to about 64.8% sulfur hexafluoride,, 0.0% to about 38.8% nitrogen, and 0.0% to about 10.0% dodecafluoro-2-methylpetan-3-one.
- 18. The blend of claim 10, said blend having an oxygen/nitrogen/perfluoropropane/sulfur hexafluoride/dodecafluoro-2-methylpetan-3-one volumetric ratio of one from a list of 44.5/0/54.5/0/0, 52.0/0/48.0/0/0, 31.2/38.8/30.0/0/0, 39.0/31.0/30.0/0/0, 31.2/0/0/64.8/0, 41.5/0/0/58.5/0, 40.8/0/30.0/29.2/0, 48.0/0/30.0/22.0/0, 49.4/0/40.6/0/10.0, 56.6/0/33.4/0/10.0, 41.1/0/0/48.9/10.0, and 48.5/0/0/41.5/10.0.
- 19. A device to prevent the burning of combustibles and above-atmospheric oxygen concentration blends discharged from a oxygen container ruptured as a result of experiencing an impact event, said device comprising
a) a hollow covering that is mounted over the exterior said oxygen container, the interior of said hollow covering forming a sealed void space, and b) a blend of materials disclosed in said void space, said blend specified in composition and capacity to prevent the burning of above-atmospheric oxygen blend gases ejected when both said covering and said container are ruptured in an impact event, said materials mixing with said oxygen blend gases to prevent ignition of said blend when both materials and blend gases are discharged after impact.
- 20. The impact event of claim 19, wherein said impact event is a projectile impacting said oxygen container and said covering.
