Claims
- 1. A method of inhibiting the growth of algae which comprises contacting said algae with an algal inhibiting amount of an .alpha.-substituted amino acid having the formula ##STR40## wherein R.sub.1 is carboxy;
- Y is selected from the group consisting of CH.sub.2 F, CHF.sub.2, CF.sub.3 and C.tbd.CH;
- Z is selected from the group consisting of ##STR41## and the salts and individual optical isomers thereof.
- 2. A method according to claim 1 wherein Y is CHF.sub.2.
- 3. A method according to claim 1 wherein Z is ##STR42##
- 4. A method according to claim 1 wherein the .alpha.-substituted amino acid is 2-difluoromethyl-2,5-diaminopentanoic acid.
- 5. A method according to claim 1 wherein the .alpha.-substituted amino acid or the .alpha.-substituted amine is in solution at a concentration of from 0.01 mg/ml to 25 mg/ml.
