Claims
- 1. A method of providing cartographical data with a GPS display system, comprising:receiving a global positioning signal from a global positioning signal source providing information concerning a cartographical location of the GPS display system; receiving a dynamic content signal from a content provider, filtering local content data from the dynamic content data of the dynamic content signal; integrating the dynamic local content with the cartographical location information; and displaying the integrated cartographical information and dynamic content on a display device, wherein the dynamic local content is provided to the GPS display system to dynamically inform an operator of information relevant to the displayed cartographical information.
- 2. A method according to claim 1, wherein:the step of receiving a dynamic content signal from a content provider includes the steps of receiving a modulated radio frequency signal; and demodulating the received radio frequency signal to recover the content signal.
- 3. A method according to claim 2, wherein the step of receiving the modulated radio frequency signal includes the step of receiving a cellular transmission signal.
- 4. A method according to claim 2, wherein the step of receiving the modulated radio frequency signal includes the step of receiving a satellite transmission signal.
- 5. A method according to claim 2, wherein the step of receiving the modulated radio frequency signal includes the step of receiving a special communication authorization (SCA) transmission signal.
- 6. A method according to claim 1, wherein the step of filtering the local content data from the dynamic content data includes the steps of:determining a local position of the GPS display system responsive to the received GPS signal; and determining a respective distance between a position associated with each item of dynamic content data and the determined local position; and selecting, as the local content data, the content data having a respective distance less than a predetermined distance.
- 7. A method according to claim 1, wherein the dynamic content data is identified by type and the step of filtering includes the step of selecting content of a particular type as the local content data.
- 8. A method according to claim 7, further including the step of programming the filter to define the type of content selected by the filter.
- 9. A method according to claim 8, wherein the step of programming the filter includes the steps of:displaying a menu of content types on a touch-screen display; and receiving a selection of content types from the touch-screen display.
- 10. A method according to claim 8, wherein the GPS display system is in a motor vehicle and the method further comprises the steps of:monitoring an operational parameter of the motor vehicle; and responsive to the monitored parameter, automatically programming the filter to display a predetermined type of local content.
- 11. A method according to claim 10, wherein the operational parameter is a level of fuel in the motor vehicle and the predetermined type of local content includes refueling stations.
- 12. A method according to claim 1, further including the steps of:receiving a selection signal indicating a particular item of displayed local content; and responsive to the received selection signal displaying further information concerning the indicated item of displayed local content.
- 13. A method of providing advertising content to a plurality of mobile customers employing global positioning receivers for identifying a global position, comprising:providing advertising content to the plurality of mobile customers through the global positioning receivers, the advertising content being provided to global positioning receivers within a predetermined area of a hospitality venue, the advertising content corresponding to the hospitality venue; receiving the advertising content with a corresponding one of the global positioning receivers; and presenting the advertising content with global position data on a display device.
- 14. A method according to claim 13, wherein:the step of receiving the advertising content includes the steps of receiving a modulated radio frequency signal; and demodulating the received radio frequency signal to recover the advertising content signal.
- 15. A method according to claim 14, wherein the step of receiving the modulated radio frequency signal includes the step of receiving a cellular transmission signal.
- 16. A method according to claim 14, wherein the step of receiving the modulated radio frequency signal includes the step of receiving a satellite transmission signal.
- 17. A method according to claim 14, wherein the step of receiving a modulated radio frequency signal includes the step of receiving a special communication authorization (SCA) transmission signal.
- 18. A method according to claim 14, wherein:the advertising content includes position information; the step of presenting the advertising content with the global position data on a display device includes the steps of: displaying a map including a local position derived from the global position data, wherein the map includes a predetermined range of geographical positions; and the step of presenting the advertising content with the global position data on a display device includes the step of displaying only the advertising content having position information that is within the predetermined range of geographical positions.
- 19. A method according to claim 18, further including the steps of:receiving a selection of an item advertising content; and responsive to the received selection, displaying further information concerning the selected item of advertising content.
- 20. A method according to claim 19, wherein the global positioning receiver is in a motor vehicle and step of receiving the selection of the item of advertising content includes the steps of:monitoring operational parameters of the motor vehicle; and responsive to the monitored operational parameters, selecting a type of advertising content to be displayed.
- 21. A method according to claim 20, wherein the monitored operational parameter includes fuel level of the motor vehicle and the selected type of advertising content includes advertisements for refueling stations.
