Claims
- 1. A method of laundering clothes in need of bleaching and whitening which comprises the steps of
- a. forming an aqueous laundering solution of a combination laundry product comprising an active-oxygen-sensitive whitening wash aid in intimate admixture with a peroxygen laundry bleach composition, said composition both increasing levels of active oxygen during the laundering as well as delaying initial onset of active oxygen generation, said composition comprising a peroxygen source, a surface active or hydrotropic bleach activator therefor in a molar ratio of activator to peroxygen source in the range of 4:1 to about 1:20, and an effective active oxygen generation-delaying amount of quaternary ammonium salt, said effective amount being an amount which provides a quaternary ammonium salt concentration in laundry liquid in the range of from 300 mg/L to about 750 mg/L and said peroxygen source yielding 0.0001 to about 0.01 molar A.O. in the laundry liquid and
- b. immediately contacting said clothes under laundering conditions with the solution through an initial period during which the active-oxygen-sensitive wash aid is active in the solution and can achieve a whitening effect on the clothes and through a subsequent period during which the peroxygen bleach components of the combination product provide an effective bleaching level of active oxygen to the solution.
- 2. The method of laundering of claim 1 wherein said wash aid is an enzymatic stain remover.
- 3. The method of laundering of claim 2 wherein said laundering conditions include a temperature of from about 50.degree. F. to about 160.degree. F. and a pH of from about 7 to about 13.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the quaternary ammonium salt is represented by the structural formula ##STR11## wherein X.sup.- is an anion and R.sub.1 through R.sub.4 are substituents independently selected from among the group consisting of saturated and unsaturated alkyls of from 1 to 25 carbons atoms, aryls of 6 or 10 carbon atoms and alkaryls and aralkyls of from 7 to 12 carbon atoms and mixtures thereof and reaction products composed of such materials subject to the provisos that at most one of the R substituents contains an aromatic ring and that at least one of the R substituents contains at least 4 carbon atoms.
- 5. The method of laundering of claim 4 wherein the quaternary ammonium salt is an alkyl trimethyl ammonium halide wherein the alkyl group is from 4 to 25 carbons inclusive.
- 6. The method of laundering of claim 5 wherein the quaternary ammonium salt is an alkyl trimethyl ammonium halide wherein the alkyl group is from 8 to 16 carbons inclusive.
- 7. The method of laundering of claim 6 wherein the combination product additionally comprises a surfactant so that the solution additionally comprises a surfactant.
- 8. The method of laundering of claim 1 wherein said quaternary ammonium salt is a C.sub.12-16 alkyl trimethyl ammonium halide.
- 9. The method of laundering of claim 8 wherein said quaternary ammonium salt is dodecyltrimethyl ammonium chloride.
- 10. The method of laundering of claim 8 wherein said quaternary ammonium salt is a hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium chloride.
- 11. The method of laundering of claim 9 wherein said activator is alkanoyloxybenzene sulfonate with up to 18 carbons in the alkyl group.
- 12. The method of claim 11 wherein said activator is sodium dodecanoyloxybenzene sulfonate.
