Claims
- 1. A carriage assembly for carrying read/write heads into engagement with a recording medium, said carriage assembly comprising:
a carriage body, said body defining a sidewall having a first open end and a second open end with a passage extending therebetween, said passage adapted to slidingly receive a guide track; a coil interlockingly coupled with said carriage body sidewall; and at least one carriage arm interlockingly coupled with said carriage body sidewall.
- 2. The carriage assembly in claim 1 wherein the carriage body is made of a plastic material.
- 3. The carriage assembly in claim 1 further comprising:
a first bearing interlockingly coupled with said sidewall proximate said first opening and a second bearing securely coupled with said sidewall proximate said second opening.
- 4. The carriage assembly in claim 3 further comprising:
a guide track slidably mounted within said passageway in sliding cooperation with said bearings.
- 5. The carriage assembly in claim 1 further comprising:
at least one in-rigger coupled with said sidewall in balancing cooperation with said carriage assembly such that the carriage assembly is maintained in operating position as the carriage assembly is manipulated to engage a recording medium.
- 6. The carriage assembly in claim 5 wherein said in-rigger is integrally formed with said sidewall in cooperation with said coil.
- 7. The carriage assembly in claim 6 wherein said coil further defines a sidewall having a generally rectangular cross-section, said sidewall having a relative outer surface and relative inner surface, and wherein said inrigger is in cooperation with a portion of said coil inner surface.
- 8. The carriage assembly in claim 1 wherein said carriage body is adapted to be coupled with traces for a voice coil, a circuit amplifier, and flex circuit.
- 9. A carriage assembly for carrying read/write heads into engagement with a recording medium, said carriage assembly comprising:
a carriage body, said body having a sidewall; and a coil interlockingly coupled with the sidewall.
- 10. The carriage assembly in claim 9 further comprising:
at least one carriage arm, said arm interlockingly coupled with said carriage body sidewall.
- 11. The carriage assembly in claim 9 wherein said carriage body is made of a plastic material.
- 12. The carriage assembly in claim 9, wherein said carriage body further comprises:
a first open end and second open end with a passage extending therebetween, said passage adapted to slidingly receive a guide track.
- 13. The carriage assembly in claim 12 further comprising:
a first bearing interlockingly coupled proximate said first open end and a second bearing securely coupled proximate said second open end; and a guide track slidingly mounted with said passage in sliding cooperation with said bearings.
- 14. The carriage assembly in claim 9 further comprising:
at least one in-rigger coupled with said carriage body sidewall such that the carriage assembly is maintained in operating position as the carriage assembly is manipulated along an inner return path to engage a recording medium.
- 15. The carriage assembly in claim 1.4 wherein said in-rigger is integrally formed with said carriage body sidewall in cooperation with said coil.
- 16. The carriage assembly in claim 14 wherein said coil further defines a sidewall having a generally rectangular cross-section, said coil sidewall having a relative outer surface and relative inner surface, and wherein said in-rigger is in cooperation with a portion of said coil inner surface.
- 17. A carriage assembly for carrying read/write heads into engagement with a recording medium, said carriage assembly comprising:
a carriage body, said body having a sidewall; and at least one carriage arm, said arm interlockingly coupled with said carriage body sidewall.
- 18. The carriage assembly in claim 17 further comprising:
a coil interlockingly coupled with the sidewall.
- 19. The carriage assembly in claim 17 wherein said carriage body is made of a plastic material.
- 20. The carriage assembly in claim 17, wherein said carriage body further comprises:
a first open end and second open end with a passage extending therebetween, said passage adapted to slidingly receive a guide track.
- 21. The carriage assembly in claim 20 further comprising:
a first bearing interlockingly coupled proximate said first open end and a second bearing securely coupled proximate said second open end; and a guide track slidingly mounted with said passage in sliding cooperation with said bearings.
- 22. The carriage assembly in claim 18 further comprising:
at least one in-rigger coupled with said carriage body sidewall such that the carriage assembly is maintained in operating position as the carriage assembly is manipulated along a inner return path to engage a recording medium.
- 23. The carriage assembly in claim 22 wherein said in-rigger is integrally formed with said carriage body sidewall in cooperation with said coil.
- 24. The carriage assembly in claim 23 wherein said coil further defines a sidewall having a generally rectangular cross-section, said coil sidewall having a relative outer surface and relative inner surface, and wherein said in-rigger is in cooperation with a portion of said coil inner surface.
- 25. A carriage assembly for carrying read/write heads into engagement with a recording medium, said carriage assembly comprising:
carriage body, said body having a sidewall that defines a first open end and a second open end with a passage therebetween; and at least one bearing interlockingly coupled proximate said first open end.
- 26. The carriage assembly in claim 25 further comprising:
a coil interlockingly coupled with said carriage body sidewall.
- 27. The carriage assembly in claim 26 further comprising an inrigger coupled with said coil.
- 28. The carriage assembly in claim 25 further comprising:
at least one carriage arm interlockingly coupled with said carriage body sidewall.
- 29. The carriage assembly produced by the process comprising the following steps:
positioning a coil within a mold; positioning at least one carriage arm within the mold; injecting a material around a portion of said coil and carriage arm to form a carriage body having a sidewall as the material hardens such that the coil and carriage arm are interlockingly coupled with said carriage body sidewall.
- 30. The carriage assembly produced by the process in claim 29 wherein the injected material is a plastic material.
- 31. The carriage assembly produced by the process in claim 29 further comprising the step of:
injecting said material around a portion of said coil and carriage arm to form a carriage body having a sidewall having a first open end and a second open end with a passage therebetween as the material hardens such that the coil and carriage arm are interlockingly coupled with said carriage body sidewall and the first open end, second open end, and passage are adapted to slidingly receive a guide track.
- 32. The carriage assembly produced by the process in 31 further comprising the steps of:
positioning a first bearing within said mold; and injecting said material around a portion of said coil, carriage arm, and bearing to form a carriage body having a sidewall having a first open end and a second open end with a passage therebetween as the material hardens such that the coil and carriage arm are interlockingly coupled with said carriage body sidewall and said first bearing is interlockingly coupled with said sidewall proximate said first open end.
- 33. The carriage assembly produced by the process in 30, wherein said mold is an injection mold and said material is injection molded into the injection mold.
- 34. The carriage assembly produced by the process comprising the following steps:
positioning a coil within a mold; and injecting a material around a portion of said coil to form a carriage body having a sidewall as the material hardens such that the coil is interlockingly coupled with said carriage body sidewall.
- 35. The carriage assembly produced by the process in claim 34 further comprising the steps of:
positioning at least one carriage arm within the mold; and injecting a material around a portion of said coil and carriage arm to form a carriage body having a sidewall as the material hardens such that the coil and carriage arm are interlockingly coupled with said carriage body sidewall.
- 36. The carriage assembly produced by the process in claim 34 wherein the injected material is a plastic material.
- 37. The carriage assembly produced by the process in claim 35 further comprising:
injecting said material around a portion of said coil and carriage arm to form a carriage body having a sidewall having a first open end and a second open end with a passage therebetween as the material hardens such that the coil and carriage arm are interlockingly coupled with said carriage body sidewall and the first open end, second open end, and passage are adapted to slidingly receive a guide track.
- 38. The carriage assembly produced by the process in 37 further comprising:
positioning a first bearing within said mold; injecting said material around a portion of said coil, carriage arm, and bearing to form a carriage body having a sidewall having a first open end and a second open end with a passage therebetween as the material hardens such that the coil and carriage arm are interlockingly coupled with said carriage body sidewall and said first bearing is interlockingly coupled with said sidewall proximate said first open end.
- 39. The carriage assembly produced by the process in 36, wherein said mold is an injection mold and said material is injection molded into the injection mold.
- 40. The carriage assembly produced by the process comprising the following steps:
positioning at least one carriage arm within a mold; and injecting a material around a portion of said carriage arm to form a carriage body having a sidewall as the material hardens such that the carriage arm is interlockingly coupled with said carriage body sidewall.
- 41. The carriage assembly produced by the process in claim 40 further comprising the steps of:
positioning a coil within a mold; and injecting a material around a portion of said coil and carriage arm to form a carriage body having a sidewall as the material hardens such that the coil and carriage arm are interlockingly coupled with said carriage body sidewall.
- 42. The carriage assembly produced by the process in claim 40 wherein the injected material is a plastic material.
- 43. The carriage assembly produced by the process in claim 40 further comprising:
injecting said material around a portion of said carriage arm to form a carriage body having a sidewall having a first open end and a second open end with a passage therebetween as the material hardens such that the carriage arm is interlockingly coupled with said carriage body sidewall and the first open end, second open end, and passage are adapted to slidingly receive a guide track.
- 44. The carriage assembly produced by the process comprising the steps of:
positioning at least one bearing within a mold; and injecting a material around at least a portion of said bearing to form a carriage body having a sidewall having a first open end and a second open end with a passage extending therebetween as the material hardens such that said bearing is interlockingly coupled with said sidewall proximate said first open end.
- 45. The carriage assembly produced by the process in claim 44, further comprising the steps of:
positioning a coil within said mold; and injecting said material around at least a portion of said bearing and at least a portion of said coil to form a carriage body having a sidewall having a first open end and a second open end with a passage extending therebetween as the material hardens such that said bearing is interlockingly coupled with said sidewall proximate said first open end and said coil is interlockingly coupled with said sidewall.
- 46. The carriage assembly in claim 44 further comprising the steps of:
positioning at least one carriage arm within said mold; and injecting said material around at least a portion of said bearing and at least a portion of said carriage arm to form a carriage body having a sidewall having a first open end and a second open end with a passage extending therebetween as the material hardens such that said bearing is interlockingly coupled with said sidewall proximate said first open end and said carriage arm is interlockingly coupled with said sidewall.
- 47. A carriage arm comprising:
an elongated body, said body having a proximal end and distal, said distal end adapted to securely receive a load beam, said proximal end adapted to be coupled to at least a carriage body, said elongated body defining a bead between said first end and second end.
- 48. The carriage arm in claim 47, wherein said elongated body defines at least one opening proximate said first end, said opening provided for coupling a head to said elongated body.
- 49. The carriage arm in claim 47, wherein said arm is adapted to be interlockingly coupled to a carriage assembly body.
- 50. The carriage arm in claim 49, wherein said elongated body defines at least a first set of slots proximate said proximal end, said slots adapted to be interlockingly coupled to a carriage assembly body.
- 51. The carriage arm in claim 50, wherein said body further defines at least one through hole adapted to enable a plastic material to flow through.
- 52. The carriage arm in claim 47, wherein said body further defines at least one aperture for reducing the weight of the body.
