Claims
- 1. A method of making a plastic pipe adaptor comprising:
- providing a length of pipe having a plastic pipe wall and a coupling end;
- providing a substantially rigid pipe stiffener sized to fit inside the pipe;
- providing a substantially rigid collar sized to fit about the pipe exteriorly of the pipe wall;
- providing the collar with at least one recess therein;
- disposing the stiffener effectively entirely inside the pipe adjacent the pipe end opening and disposing the collar about the pipe and spaced entirely from the coupling end such that a portion of the pipe wall is disposed between the stiffener and the collar recess; and
- deflecting at least a portion of the pipe stiffener outwardly against the pipe wall portion by deforming the pipe stiffener portion by an amount sufficient to wedge the pipe wall portion into engagement with the collar recess, whereby to grip the pipe wall such that fastening the collar to a member holds the pipe to said member.
- 2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:
- providing the collar with a plurality of recesses therein;
- disposing the stiffener and the collar such that a portion of the pipe wall is disposed between the stiffener and the collar recesses; and
- deflecting at least a portion of the pipe stiffener outwardly against the pipe wall portion by an amount sufficient to wedge the pipe wall portion into engagement with the collar recesses.
- 3. The method of claim 2 further comprising providing a sawtooth configuration to the plurality of recesses.
- 4. The method of claim 2 further comprising providing a sinusoidal configuration to the plurality of recesses.
- 5. The method of claim 2 further comprising providing a triangular configuration to the plurality of recesses.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the stiffener has an axial length such that a portion of the stiffener extends beyond the pipe wall portion whereby to extend beyond an area underlying the collar, the method further comprising urging the extended stiffener portion outwardly against the pipe wall.
- 7. The method of claim 1 further comprising providing a generally rectangular configuration to the collar recess.
- 8. The method of claim 1 further comprising providing a generally triangular configuration to the collar recess.
- 9. The method of claim 1 further comprising providing a generally arcuate configuration to the collar recess.
- 10. The method of claim 1, further including the step of disposing the stiffener entirely inside the pipe adjacent the pipe opening end.
- 11. A method of making a plastic pipe adaptor comprising:
- providing a length of pipe having a plastic pipe wall and a coupling end;
- providing a substantially rigid pipe stiffener sized to fit inside the pipe;
- providing a projection on a portion of the pipe stiffener;
- providing a substantially rigid collar sized to fit about the pipe exteriorly of the pipe wall;
- providing the collar with at least one recess therein;
- disposing the stiffener effectively entirely inside the pipe adjacent the pipe end opening and disposing the collar about the pipe and spaced entirely from the coupling end such that a portion of the pipe wall is disposed between the stiffener and the collar recess; and
- deflecting at least the portion of the pipe stiffener having the projection outwardly against the pipe wall portion by an amount sufficient to wedge the pipe wail portion into engagement with the collar recess whereby to grip the pipe wall such that fastening the collar to a member holds the pipe to said member.
- 12. The method of claim 11 wherein the stiffener has an axial length such that a portion of the stiffener extends beyond the pipe wall portion whereby to extend beyond an area underlying the collar, the method further comprising urging the extended stiffener portion outwardly against the pipe wall.
- 13. The method of claim 11, further including the step of disposing the stiffener entirely inside the pipe adjacent the pipe opening end.
- 14. The method of claim 11, further comprising providing a generally rectangular configuration to the collar recess.
- 15. The method of claim 11, further comprising providing a generally triangular configuration to the collar recess.
- 16. The method of claim 11, further comprising providing a generally arcuate configuration to the collar recess.
- 17. The method of claim 11 further comprising:
- providing the collar with a plurality of recesses therein;
- 18. The method of claim 11 further comprising providing a sawtooth configuration to the plurality of recesses.
- 19. The method of claim 11 further comprising providing a sinusoidal configuration to the plurality of recesses.
- 20. The method of claim 11 further comprising providing a triangular configuration to the plurality of recesses.
- 21. A method of making a plastic pipe adaptor comprising:
- providing a length of pipe having a plastic pipe wall and a coupling end;
- providing a substantially rigid pipe stiffener sized to fit inside the pipe;
- providing a substantially rigid collar sized to fit about the pipe exteriorly of the pipe wall;
- providing the collar with at least one recess therein;
- providing the collar with a radially outwardly extending integral flange;
- disposing the stiffener inside the pipe adjacent the pipe end opening and disposing the collar about the pipe such that a portion of the plastic pipe wall is disposed between the stiffener and the collar recess; and
- deflecting at least a portion of the pipe stiffener outwardly against the pipe wall portion by deforming the pipe stiffener portion by an amount sufficient to wedge the pipe wall portion into engagement with the collar recess whereby to grip the pipe wall such that fastening the collar to a member holds the pipe to said member.
- 22. A method of making a plastic pipe adaptor comprising:
- providing a length of pipe having a plastic pipe wall and a coupling end;
- providing a substantially rigid pipe stiffener sized to fit inside the pipe;
- providing a substantially rigid collar sized to fit about the pipe exteriorly of the pipe wall;
- providing the collar with an inner surface, an outer surface and a recess therein below the outer surface;
- providing the collar with an annular groove above the inner surface which opens radially outwardly through the outer surface;
- disposing the stiffener inside the pipe adjacent the pipe end opening and disposing the collar about the pipe such that a portion of the plastic pipe wall is disposed between the stiffener and the collar recess; and
- deflecting at least a portion of the pipe stiffener outwardly against the pipe wall portion by an amount sufficient to wedge the pipe wall portion into engagement with the collar recess whereby to grip the pipe wall such that fastening the collar to a member holds the pipe to said member.
