Claims
- 1. A method of making a tubular collagen casing comprising:
- (a) directing an inner collagen gel and an outer collagen gel to an extruder;
- (b) feeding the inner gel radially outwardly through a first group of radially extending orifices to form a plurality of inner gel ropes; (c) feeding the outer gel radially inwardly through a second group of radially extending orifices to form a plurality of outer gel ropes;
- (d) bringing said radially inwardly directed outer gel and said radially outwardly directed inner gel together to form a fluid mass having a substantially annular cross section with the ropes from the outer gel being predominantly located adjacent the outer border of the annulus and the ropes from the inner gel being predominantly located adjacent the inner border of the annulus; and
- (e) feeding the annular mass between two counter-rotating concentric surfaces to thereby direct said outer gel ropes and said inner gel ropes in opposite helical directions and form a two-layered tubular casing.
- 2. A method of making a tubular collagen casing comprising:
- (a) providing a first collagen gel and a second collegen gel;
- (b) subjecting the first gel to extrusion through a group of radially extending orifices to form a first set of a plurality of ropes;
- (c) subjecting the second gel to extrusion through a group of radially extending orifices to form a second set of a plurality of ropes;
- (d) directing the first set of a plurality of ropes in a radially outward direction and winding the same into a tubular form with the ropes being helically directed in a first direction;
- (e) directing the second set of a plurality of ropes in a radially inward direction and winding the same into a tubular form with said second set of ropes being helically directed in a second direction; and
- (f) overlapping said first and said second sets of a plurality of ropes to thereby form a tube consisting of first and second layers.
- 3. A method of forming a tubular collagen casing from a gel including fibrils comprising:
- (a) providing two sources of fibrillar collagen gel;
- (b) subjecting the first source of gel to extrusion through a group of radially extending orifices to thereby form a first set of a plurality of ropes and to orient the fibrils at least on the outside surface of the ropes in the longitudinal direction of the ropes;
- (c) subjecting the second source of gel to extrusion through a group of radially extending orifices to thereby form a second set of a plurality of ropes and to orient the fibrils at least on the outside surface of the ropes in the longitudinal direction of the ropes;
- (d) directing the first set of ropes in one radial direction and directing the second set of ropes in the opposite radial direction to merge the two sets together in a tubular form to produce two united layers of ropes of collagen;
- (e) helically winding the ropes in each of said layers in opposite directions in the tubular structure; and
- (f) sizing the tubular product.
