Claims
- 1. An optical fiber comprising a core portion which is surrounded by an optical cladding portion, itself surrounded by a protective coating, characterised in that the fiber demonstrates a spin about its longitudinal axis in alternately opposite senses without being interrupted by portions of non-twisted fiber, and that the fiber comprises at least one longitudinal segment along which the magnitude of the spin is at least 360.degree., and that the spin is a uniformly periodic function of longitudinal position.
- 2. The optical fiber according to claim 1, characterised in that the length of the longitudinal segment does not exceed 0.33 m.
- 3. An, optical fiber comprising:
- a core portion;
- a cladding portion surrounding the core portion; and
- a protective coating surrounding the cladding portion wherein the optical fiber has a mean polarization mode dispersion value of less than 0.4 ps/km.sup.1/2 and the optical fiber has a spin about its longitudinal axis in alternately opposite senses without being interrupted by portions of non-twisted fiber, the spin having a uniformly periodic function of longitudinal position.
- 4. The optical fiber of claim 3 wherein the fiber is single-mode.
- 5. The optical fiber of claim 3 wherein the fiber comprises materials including natural silica, synthetic silica, plastics, undoped material, or doped material.
- 6. The optical fiber of claim 3 wherein the fiber has a mean polarization mode dispersion value of less than 0.2 ps/km.sup.1/2.
- 7. The optical fiber of claim 6 wherein the fiber has a mean polarization mode dispersion value of less than 0.1 ps/km.sup.1/2.
- 8. The optical fiber of claim 7 wherein the fiber has a mean polarization mode dispersion value of less than 0.05 ps/km.sup.1/2.
- 9. The optical fiber of claim 8 wherein the fiber has a mean polarization mode dispersion value greater than 0.032 ps/km.sup.1/2.
- 10. An optical fiber comprising:
- a core portion having a longitudinal axis;
- a cladding portion surrounding the core portion; and
- a protective coating surrounding the cladding portion, the optical fiber having uniformly repeating permanent twists of at least one full turn along a portion of the longitudinal axis, the permanent twists alternatively reversing direction without being interrupted by portions of non-twisted fiber.
- 11. The optical fiber of claim 10 wherein the longitudinal portion of the full turn of the permanent twist is less than one meter in length.
- 12. An optical fiber system comprising:
- a core portion;
- a cladding portion surrounding the core portion;
- a protective coating surrounding the cladding portion; and
- a pair of metal wheels, the pair of wheels having peripheral curved surfaces and two different rotational axes, the pair of wheels configured to have varying amounts of relative displacement from each other along their respective rotational axes, the amount of relative displacement having a maximum relative displacement, y, the optical fiber pressed between the curved surfaces of the pair of wheels, the optical fiber having a diameter, D, and an uniformly alternating permanent twist running along a longitudinal axis of the optical fiber without being interrupted by portions of non-twisted fiber, the permanent twist having an amplitude, T, in the optical fiber related to the maximum relative displacement, y, of the pair of wheels and the diameter, D, of the optical fiber by T=180y/.pi.D.
- 13. The optical fiber of claim 12 wherein the pair of wheels are configured to each alternatively reverse direction of rotation with at a frequency f, the fiber configured to pass through the pair of wheels at a velocity v, the optical fiber having a spatial period of twist, L, of the optical fiber related to the velocity, v, and the frequency, f, by L=v/f.
- 14. An optical fiber comprising:
- a core portion;
- a cladding portion surrounding the core portion; and
- a protective coating surrounding the cladding portion wherein the optical fiber has a longitudinal axis, first sections of the optical fiber permanently twisted along the longitudinal axis, the first sections being contiguous with one another, each of the first sections having an amount of twist without non-twisted portions, the amount of twist of all the of the first sections summing to at least one full turn, second sections of the optical fiber being mirror images of the first sections of the optical fiber, the second sections permanently twisted along the longitudinal axis without non-twisted portions, the second sections being contiguous with one another, and each of the second sections having an amount of twist being a mirror image of one of the sections of the first sections of the optical fiber, the amount of twist of all of the second sections summing to at least one full turn and one of the first sections being contiguous with one of the second sections without being interrupted by non-twisted portions of optical fiber.
- 15. The optical fiber of claim 14 wherein the first sections have a total length along the longitudinal axis summing to less than one meter.
