Claims
- 1. Process for the production of acrylonitrile from propylene and ammonia in the presence of attrition resistant multicomponent molybdate catalyst particles having an SiO.sub.2 -rich surface layer and prepared by the process comprising:
- (a) forming a slurry comprised of catalyst or catalyst precursor particles dispersed in a solution of a solute which consists essentially of an aqueous silicic acid solution equivalent to a concentration of SiO.sub.2 not exceeding about 6 wt %, the relative amounts of the particles and silicic acid chosen so that the weight of the SiO.sub.2 is about 3-15% of the total weight of the particles and the SiO.sub.2, the silicic acid containing silica having a particle size no greater than 5 nm; and
- (b) spray drying the slurry of step (a) to form porous microspheres; and
- (c) calcining the spray dried microspheres of step (b) at an elevated temperature which is below the temperature which is substantially deleterious to the catalyst, to produce attrition resistant multicomponent molybdate catalyst particles having said SiO.sub.2 -rich surface layer.
- 2. In a process for producing acrylonitrile from propylene over a multicomponent molybdenum catalyst, the improvement consisting of using attrition resistant multicomponent molybdenum catalyst particles having an SiO.sub.2 rich surface layer and prepared by the process comprising:
- (a) forming a slurry comprised of catalyst, catalyst precursor or catalyst support particles dispersed in a solution of a solute which consists essentially of an aqueous silicic acid solution equivalent to a concentration of SiO.sub.2 not exceeding about 6 wt %, the relative amounts of the particles and silicic acid chosen so that the weight of the SiO.sub.2 is about 3 to 15% of the total weight of the particles and the SiO.sub.2 the silicic acid containing silica having particle size no greater than 5 nm; and
- (b) spray drying the slurry of step (a) to form porous microspheres; and
- (c) calcining the spray dried microspheres of step (b) at an elevated temperature which is below the temperature which is substantially deleterious to the catalyst, to produce attrition resistant multicomponent molybdate catalyst particles having said SiO.sub.2 -rich surface layer.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein the concentration of SiO.sub.2 in the aqueous silicic acid solution does not exceed 5 wt. %.
