Claims
- 1. A method of assembling a compressor including a crankcase having a top surface, a cylinder head having a bottom surface for cooperatively engaging with the top surface of the crankcase, and a pressure relief valve comprising a valve body and a valve mechanism for relieving pressure from a discharge pressure chamber in the cylinder head, the method comprising the steps of:
- providing a bore in the cylinder head having an opening in the bottom surface thereof, the bore defining the valve body and the bore being capable of receiving the valve mechanism through the bore opening;
- introducing the valve mechanism into the valve body through the bore opening, the valve mechanism being operatively oriented in the valve body to respond to pressures being introduced through the bore opening; and
- retaining the valve mechanism within the valve body until the cylinder head is operatively mounted to the crankcase and the top surface of the crankcase causes the valve mechanism to be positively captured within the valve body.
- 2. The method of assembling a compressor of claim 1 in which:
- the step of retaining the valve mechanism within the valve body is by providing an annular undercut in the valve body adjacent to the bore opening, providing a disk-shaped member of deformable material, positioning the disk-shaped member substantially coplanar with the annular undercut, and compressing the disk-shaped member until the disk-shaped member expands into the undercut.
- 3. The method of assembling a compressor of claim 1 and further comprising the steps of:
- providing a discharge hole in the cylinder head, the discharge hole providing communication between the discharge pressure chamber and the bottom surface;
- providing a valve plate having duct means for providing communication between the bore opening and the discharge hole when the valve plate is operatively interposed between the cylinder head and the crankcase; and
- mounting the cylinder head to the crankcase with the valve plate operatively interposed therebetween.
- 4. The method of assembling a compressor of claim 3 in which:
- the duct means comprises a passageway formed in the valve plate, the passageway having one end aligned with the discharge hole and another end aligned with the bore opening when the compressor is assembled.
