Claims
- 1. A method of making a casting tape, comprising the steps of:
- charging an extrudable material selected from the group consisting of low temperature thermoplastic polymers and viscous curable resins to an extruder; and
- extruding said material through a die to form an apertured sheet, wherein said sheet contains a plurality of apertures and has at least 20 percent aperture volume.
- 2. A method of making a casting tape according to claim 1, wherein said extrusion step comprises the steps of:
- extruding at a first rate a first filament-forming extrudable material to form a plurality of straight spaced parallel elements;
- extruding at a second rate faster than said first extrusion rate and between adjacent spaced, continuous parallel elements a second filament-forming extrudable material, with the undulatable element being positioned with each opposite face of its wide dimension facing one of the straight continuous parallel elements and wherein the materials have a tacky first state which permits the elements to bond to one another at points of mutual contact and a second physical state in which the elements have sufficient structural integrity to maintain their extruded bonded shape;
- causing the undulatable element to undulate in its thin dimension, while the elements are sufficiently tacky to cause bonding therebetween at points of contact, by permitting contact between a parallel element on one side of the undulatable element while maintaining the other adjacent parallel element in sufficiently close proximity to permit subsequent contact between it and the undulating undulatable element and to permit repetition of such undulation and subsequent contact, thereby providing an article having an undulated element with apexes aligned on opposed sides wherein the apexes on one side of the undulated element are bonded to one of the parallel elements and the apexes on the other side of the undulated element are bonded to the other adjacent parallel element; and
- changing or permitting the change of the plastic masses to the second physical state.
- 3. A method of making a casting tape according to claim 1, wherein said extrusion step comprises the steps of:
- extruding at a first rate a first filament-forming extrudable material to form a plurality of inner filaments;
- extruding at a second rate a second filament-forming extrudable material to form a plurality of outer filaments, wherein the materials have a tacky first state which permits the filaments to bond to one another at points of mutual contact and a second physical state in which the filaments have sufficient structural integrity to maintain their extruded bonded shape;
- causing the inner filaments to undulate while the filaments are sufficiently tacky to cause bonding therebetween at points of contact; and
- changing or permitting the change of the plastic masses to the second physical state.
- 4. A method of making a casting tape according to claim 1, wherein said die comprises a plurality of holes and said extrusion step comprises the steps of:
- extruding a filament-forming extrudable material to form a plurality of filaments, wherein the material has a tacky first state which permits the filaments to bond to one another at points of mutual contact and a second physical state in which the filaments have sufficient structural integrity to maintain their extruded bonded shape;
- causing the filaments to undulate while the filaments are sufficiently tacky to cause bonding therebetween at points of contact; and
- changing or permitting the change of the plastic masses to the second physical state.
- 5. A method of making a casting tape according to claim 1, wherein said extrudable material comprises a low temperature thermoplastic polymer having a softening or melting temperature less than about 90.degree. C.
- 6. A method of making a casting tape according to claim 2, wherein said sheet has between 7.75 and 77.50 apertures per cm.sup.2.
- 7. A method of making a casting tape according to claim 5, wherein said low temperature thermoplastic polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyurethane, polyethylene, ethylene vinyl acetate, polyisoprene, and polyester.
- 8. A method of making a casting tape according to claim 1, wherein said sheet further comprises an inorganic or organic filler and said sheet has a yield stress of at least 500 dyne/cm.sup.2 when heated to a temperature at which said sheet is wrapped about a body member.
- 9. A method of making a casting tape according to claim 8, wherein said filler is selected from the group consisting of inorganic fillers such as glass, amorphous and crystalline silica (SiO.sub.2), soda lime borosilicate, amorphous sodium/potassium/aluminum silicate glass, alumina, iron oxide, calcium metasilicate, calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, kaolin, mica, talc, barium sulfate, boron fiber, carbon fiber, glass fiber, ground glass fiber, flake glass, metallic fiber, feldspar, barium ferrite, titanium oxide, and ceramic particles.
- 10. A method of making a casting tape according to claim 8, wherein said filler is selected from the group consisting of glass and ceramic bubbles.
- 11. A method of making a casting tape according to claim 8, wherein said filler is selected from the group consisting of organic fillers, expandable bubbles, and thermoset filler materials.
- 12. A method of making a casting tape according to claim 7, wherein said sheet further comprises a higher melting temperature secondary polymer and said sheet has a yield stress of at least 500 dyne/cm.sup.2 when heated to a temperature at which said sheet is wrapped about a body member.
- 13. A method of making a casting tape according to claim 1, wherein said extrudable material comprises a viscous curable resin having a sufficient yield stress to resist flow at ambient temperature for extended periods of time.
- 14. A method of making a casting tape according to claim 13, wherein said viscous curable resin comprises a sufficient amount of a high molecular weight secondary polymer such that the mixture of said resin and said secondary polymer has a tan .delta. less than 20 at 1.0 rad/sec.
- 15. A method of making a casting tape according to claim 1, wherein said sheet further comprises a water soluble liner film, wherein said film is in contact with at least one major surface of said apertured, extruded sheet.
- 16. A method of making a casting tape according to claim 15, wherein said water soluble liner comprises a polymer selected from the group consisting of polyvinylalcohol, polyacrylamides, polyacrylic acids, cellulose ether polymers, polyethylene oxides, polyethylene oxide and polypropylene oxide copolymers, esters of polyethylene oxide or polyethylene oxide and polypropylene oxide polymers and urethanes of polyethylene oxide or polyethylene oxide and polypropylene oxide polymers.
- 17. A method of making a casting tape, comprising the steps of:
- charging an extrudable low temperature thermoplastic polymer material having a softening or melting temperature less than about 90.degree. C. to an extruder, wherein said low temperature thermoplastic polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyurethane, polyethylene, ethylene vinyl acetate, polyisoprene, and polyester; and
- extruding said material through a die to form an apertured sheet, wherein said sheet contains a plurality of apertures and has at least 20 percent aperture volume, wherein said sheet further comprises an inorganic or organic filler and said sheet has a yield stress of at least 500 dyne/cm.sup.2 when heated to a temperature at which said sheet is wrapped about a body member.
- 18. A method of making a casting tape according to claim 17, wherein said thermoplastic polymer comprises polycaprolactone.
- 19. A method of making a casting tape, comprising the steps of:
- charging an extrudable viscous curable resin material having a sufficient yield stress to resist flow at ambient temperature for extended periods of time to an extruder; and
- extruding said material through a die to form an apertured sheet, wherein said sheet contains a plurality of apertures and has at least 20 percent aperture volume, and wherein said sheet further comprises an inorganic or organic filler.
- 20. A method of making a casting tape according to claim 19, wherein said curable resin material comprises an isocyanate functional prepolymer.
