Claims
- 1. A method for making a Bowman-Birk product comprising:
(a) providing acid extracted solubles from defatted soybeans; (b) adding acetone to said solubles to form a precipitate; (c) separating liquid from said precipitate; (d) drying said precipitate.
- 2. The method of claim 1 further comprising steps:
(c)(1) adding acetone to said precipitate; (c)(2) separating a second liquid.
- 3. The method of claim 2 further comprising steps:
(b)(1) mixing the acetone with said solubles; (b)(2) allowing said mixture to settle; (c) (1)(i) mixing the acetone with said precipitate; (c)(1)(ii) allowing said second mixture to settle.
- 4. The method of claim 3 further comprising step:
(c)(3) vacuum filtering said precipitate.
- 5. The method of claim 4 wherein said drying step (d) is performed by air drying said filtered precipitate.
- 6. The method of claim 5 further comprising steps:
(d)(1) dispersing said dried precipitate in water; (d)(2) filtering said dispersion; (d)(3) spray drying said dispersion.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein said soybeans are flaked and defatted with hexane.
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein said acid extraction is performed at a pH of about 4.5-6.5 with hydrochloric acid.
- 9. The method of claim 8 wherein said acid extraction is performed with mixing for about 1 hour.
- 10. The method of claim 2 wherein the amount of acetone added in step (b) is about 2 times the amount of said solubles by weight.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein the amount of acetone added in step (c)(1) is about half as much acetone as was added in step (b).
- 12. The method of claim 3 wherein said mixing steps (b)(1) and (c)(1)(i) are for about 10 minutes each.
- 13. The method of claim 12 wherein said settling steps (b)(2) and (c)(1)(ii) are for at least 1 hour each.
- 14. The method of claim 6 wherein said acid extraction is performed at a pH of about 4.5 and said product has about 30-40% protein by weight of dry matter and a chymotrypsin inhibitor level greater than 140 milligrams/gram.
- 15. The method of claim 6 wherein said acid extraction is performed at a pH of about 5.4 and said product has greater than 60% protein by weight of dry matter and a chymotrypsin inhibitor level greater than 100 milligrams/gram.
- 16. A pharmaceutical composition or dietary supplement comprising the product made in accordance with the method of claim 2.
- 17. An acetone extracted Bowman-Birk product having at least 30% soy protein by weight of dry matter and a chymotrypsin inhibitor level of at least 90 milligrams/gram.
- 18. A method for making a Bowman-Birk inhibitor concentrate without alcohol extraction comprising:
(a) providing defatted soybean flakes; (b) slurrying said flakes with water; (c) adjusting the pH of said slurry to about 4-6; (d) mixing said pH adjusted slurry; (e) separating soluble material from said pH adjusted slurry; (f) mixing acetone with said solubles to form a precipitate, with the amount of acetone being about twice as much as the amount of said solubles by weight; (g) decanting liquid from said precipitate; (h) mixing acetone with said precipitate, with the amount of acetone being about half as much as the amount of acetone used in step (f); (i) decanting liquid from said second acetone mixture; (j) vacuum filtering said precipitate.
- 19. The method of claim 18 further comprising:
(k) air drying said vacuum filtered precipitate; (l) dispersing said air dried precipitate in water; (m) filtering said dispersion; (n) spray drying said filtered dispersion.
- 20. The method of claim 18 wherein said soybean flakes are defatted with hexane and the pH is adjusted with hydrochloric acid.
- 21. The method of claim 18 wherein said mixing step (d) is performed for about 1 hour and said mixing steps (f) and (h) are performed for about 10 minutes each.
- 22. The method of claim 21 further comprising allowing said acetone mixtures to settle for about 1 hour each before said decanting steps.
- 23. The method of claim 19 wherein said pH is about 5 and the amount of said product made is about 10% of the amount of said flakes by weight, with said product having a chymotrypsin inhibitor level of about 120 milligrams/gram.
- 24. A pharmaceutical composition or dietary supplement comprising a product made in accordance with the method of claim 19.
- 25. A Bowman-Birk product having at least 30% soy protein by weight of dry matter and a chymotrypsin inhibitor level of at least 90 milligrams/gram.
- 26. The product of claim 25 having less than 90% protein by weight of dry matter.
