Claims
- 1. A method of making a twisted elongated yarn, said method comprising providing a first elongated yarn of polymer material of indeterminate length having a deformed outer surface and a non-uniform cross-section over its entire length, providing a second elongated yarn of polymer material of indeterminate length having a deformed outer surface and a non-uniform cross-section over its entire length, continually twisting said first and second elongated yarns together to form a composite yarn therefrom having a twisted shape, and heating said composite yarn to a temperature sufficient to only cause said composite yarn to retain its twisted shape, wherein said first and second elongated yarns are not adhered to each other.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein said temperature is below the softening temperature of said polymer material.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein said first and second elongated yarns are foamed polymer material.
- 4. The method of claim 1, further including cooling said composite yarn after said twisting to ambient temperature.
- 5. A heat set twisted elongated yarn comprising a first elongated yarn of polymer material having a deformed outer surface and a non-uniform cross-section over its entire length twisted together with a second elongated yarn of polymer material having a deformed outer surface and a non-uniform cross-section over its entire length forming a composite yarn having a twisted shape, said first and second elongated yarns having said twisted shape being heated to a sufficient temperature only to cause said composite yarn to retain its twisted shape, wherein said first and second elongated yarns are not adhered to each other.
- 6. The yarn of claim 5, wherein said first and second yarns are of the same or different construction.
- 7. The yarn of claim 5, wherein said temperature is below the softening temperature of said polymer material.
- 8. The yarn of claim 5, wherein said first and second elongated yarns are foamed polymer material.
- 9. A method of making a twisted elongated yarn comprising the steps of (1) providing a first elongated yarn of polymer material of indeterminate length having a deformed outer surface and a non-uniform cross-section over its entire length, (2) providing a second elongated yarn of polymer material of indeterminate length having a deformed outer surface and a non-uniform cross-section over its entire length, (3) twisting said first and second elongated yarns together to form a composite yarn therefrom having a twisted shape, and (4) heating the composite yarn of step (3) to a predetermined yarn surface temperature which is sufficient only to cause said composite yarn to retain its twisted shape, wherein said first and second elongated yarns are not adhered to each other.
- 10. The method of claim 9, wherein said first amd second elongated yarns are foamed polymer material.
- 11. The method of claim 9, wherein the composite yarn is wound onto a spool.
- 12. A method of making a twisted elongated yarn, said method comprising providing a first elongated yarn consisting of a single strand of polymer material of indeterminate length, providing a second elongated yarn consisting of a single strand of polymer material of indeterminate length, at least one of said first elongated yarn and said second elongated yarn having a deformed outer surface and a non-uniform cross-section over its entire length, continually twisting said first and second elongated yarns together to form a composite yarn therefrom having a twisted shape, and heating said composite yarn to a temperature sufficient to only cause said composite yarn to retain its twisted shape, wherein said first and second elongated yarns are not adhered to each other.
- 13. The method of claim 12 wherein said temperature is below the softening temperature of said polymer material.
- 14. The method of claim 12, further including cooling said composite yarn after said twisting to ambient temperature.
- 15. A twisted elongated yarn comprising a first elongated yarn consisting of a single strand of polymer material twisted together with a second elongated yarn consisting of a single strand of polymer material forming a composite yarn having a twisted shape, at least one of said first elongated yarn and said second elongated yarn having a deformed outer surface and a non-uniform cross-section over its entire length, said first and second elongated yarns having said twisted shape being heated to a sufficient temperature only to cause said composite yarn to retain its twisted shape, wherein said first and second elongated yarns are not adhered to each other.
- 16. The yarn of claim 15, wherein said first and second yarns are of the same or different construction.
- 17. The yarn of claim 15, wherein said temperature is below the softening temperature of said polymer material.
- 18. The yarn of claim 15, wherein said temperature is in the range of 100° to 200° F.
- 19. The yarn of claim 15, wherein said first and second elongated yarns are foamed polymer material.
- 20. A method of making a twisted elongated yarn comprising the steps of (1) providing a first elongated yarn consisting of a single strand of polymer material of indeterminate length, (2) providing a second elongated yarn consisting of a single strand of polymer material of indeterminate length, at least one of said first elongated yarn and said second elongated yarn having a deformed outer surface and a non-uniform cross-section over its entire length, (3) twisting said first and second elongated yarns together to form a composite yarn therefrom having a twisted shape, and (4) heating the composite yarn of step (3) to a predetermined yarn surface temperature which is sufficient only to cause said composite yarn to retain its twisted shape, wherein said first and second elongated yarns are not adhered to each other.
- 21. The method of claim 20, wherein said temperature is in the range of 100° to 200° F.
- 22. The method of claim 20, wherein said temperature is below the softening temperature of said polymer material.
- 23. The method of claim 20, wherein said first and second elongated yarns are foamed polymer material.
- 24. A method of making a twisted elongated yarn, said method comprising providing a first elongated yarn comprising a single strand of polymer material of indeterminate length having a deformed outer surface and a non-uniform cross-section over its entire length, providing a second elongated yarn comprising a single strand of polymer material of indeterminate length having a deformed outer surface and a non-uniform cross-section over its entire length, continually twisting said first and second elongated yarns together to form a composite yarn therefrom having a twisted shape, and heating said composite yarn to a temperature sufficient to only cause said composite yarn to retain its twisted shape, wherein said first and second elongated yarns are not adhered to each other.
- 25. The method of claim 24, wherein said temperature is below the softening temperature of said polymer material.
- 26. The method of claim 24, wherein said first and second elongated yarns are foamed polymer material.
- 27. A twisted elongated yarn comprising a first elongated yarn comprising a single strand of polymer material having a deformed outer surface and a non-uniform cross-section over its entire length twisted together with a second elongated yarn comprising a single strand of polymer material having a deformed outer surface and a non-uniform cross-section over its entire length forming a composite yarn having a twisted shape, said first and second elongated yarns having said twisted shape being heated to a sufficient temperature only to cause said composite yarn to retain its twisted shape, wherein said first and second elongated yarns are not adhered to each other.
- 28. The yarn of claim 27 wherein said first and second yarns are of the same or different construction.
- 29. The yarn of claim 27 wherein said temperature is below the softening temperature of said polymer material.
- 30. The yarn of claim 27 wherein said temperature is in the range of 100° to 200° F.
- 31. A method of making a twisted elongated yarn comprising the steps of (1) providing a first elongated yarn comprising a single strand of polymer material of indeterminate length having a deformed outer surface and a non-uniform cross-section over its entire length, (2) providing a second elongated yarn comprising a single strand of polymer material of indeterminate length having a deformed outer surface and a non-uniform cross-section over its entire length, (3) twisting said first and second elongated yarns together to form a composite yarn therefrom having a twisted shape, and (4) heating the composite yarn of step (3) to a predetermined yarn surface temperature which is sufficient only to cause said composite yarn to retain its twisted shape, wherein said first and second elongated yarns are not adhered to each other.
- 32. The method of claim 31, wherein said temperature is in the range of 100° to 200° F.
- 33. The method of claim 31, wherein said temperature is below the softening temperature of said polymer material.
- 34. The method of claim 31, further including cooling said composite yarn after said twisting to ambient temperature.
