Claims
- 1. A method of manufacturing an assembly of rib structures sandwiched between a thin dielectric glass layer and a glass substrate for use in a plasma addressed liquid crystal display, the method comprising:
introducing a curable glass frit containing paste into cavities in a mold to form the rib structures; forming a thin layer of a dielectric glass frit containing composition on a collector drum; transferring the rib structures from the mold to the dielectric glass frit containing layer on the collector drum; and transferring the rib structures and thin dielectric glass frit containing layer from the collector drum to the glass substrate.
- 2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the mold is a soft intaglio mold.
- 3. The method according to claim 2, wherein the mold comprises silicone.
- 4. The method according to claim 1, wherein the mold is a film on a rigid substrate, said film having slots formed therein at locations corresponding to the desired barrier ribs.
- 5. The method according to claim 4, wherein the film comprises silicone.
- 6. The method according to claim 1, wherein the glass frit containing paste comprises glass frit and a thermoplastic binder.
- 7. The method according to claim 6, wherein the dielectric glass frit containing composition comprises a dielectric glass frit and a thermoplastic binder.
- 8. The method according to claim 7, wherein the dielectric glass frit containing layer on the collector drum is heated to a temperature of from about 40° C. to about 150° C.
- 9. The method of claim 8, wherein said step of transferring said ribs onto said dielectric glass frit containing layer comprises pressing said mold against said heated dielectric glass layer on said collector drum such that said rib structures contact said dielectric glass layer, cooling said dielectric glass frit-containing layer while in contact with said barrier rib structures, and removing said mold.
- 10. The method according to claim 1, wherein the thin dielectric glass frit containing layer is from about 15 μm to about 50 μm in thickness.
- 11. The method according to claim 6, wherein said rib structures and dielectric glass frit layer are transferred from said collector roll to said substrate by contacting said rib structures to said substrate.
- 12. The method according to claim 11, wherein said substrate is heated to a temperature of from about 40° C. to about 150° C. prior to contacting said rib structures.
- 13. The method according to claim 1, wherein the forming of a thin layer of transparent glass on a collector drum comprises providing a transparent dielectric glass paste onto a polymer film on the collector drum.
- 14. A method of depositing a dielectric layer of glass onto rib structures protruding from a glass substrate, comprising:
forming rib structures on a surface of said substrate from a glass frit containing paste, said rib structures having an exposed top surface; heating the rib structures to a temperature of from about 400° C. to about 600° C.; depositing a calibrated layer of a curable dielectric glass frit containing composition onto a release substrate; contacting the dielectric glass composition layer on the release substrate to the top surface of the rib structures; and removing the release substrate.
- 15. The method of claim 14, wherein said glass frit containing paste comprises a thermoplastic binder.
- 16. The method of claim 15, wherein said dielectric glass frit containing composition comprises a thermoplastic binder.
- 17. The method according to claim 16, wherein the rib structures are heated to a temperature of from about 40° C. to about 150° C. prior to contacting said dielectric glass frit containing layer.
- 18. The method according to claim 14, wherein the calibrated layer of dielectric glass frit containing composition has a thickness of from about 15 μm to about 50 μm.
- 19. The method according to claim 16, wherein said dielectric glass frit containing layer is heated to a temperature of from about 40° C. to about 150° C. prior to contact with said barrier rib structures.
- 20. The method according to claim 14, wherein said forming of said rib structures on said substrate comprises:
depositing a curable glass frit containing paste into recesses in a mold corresponding to the shape and location of the desired rib structures; curing said curable paste to form said rib structures; contacting said rib structures to said substrate under conditions that they adhere thereto; and removing said mold.
- 21. The method according to claim 20, wherein the curable glass frit containing paste comprises a glass frit and a thermoplastic binder.
- 22. The method of claim 20, wherein said rib structures are formed on said glass substrate without the formation of residual films of the glass frit containing paste between the ribs.
- 23. The method according to claim 22, wherein said mold comprises:
a film on top of said glass substrate patterned with slots corresponding to the location of the desired barrier ribs;
- 24. The method according to claim 23, wherein the film has a thickness of from about 15 μm to about 50 μm.
- 25. The method according to claim 23, wherein said film and glass substrate are heated to a temperature of from about 40° C. to about 150° C. prior to receiving said curable glass frit containing paste.
- 26. The method according to claim 23, wherein the patterned film is provided with a rigid core structure therein.
- 27. The method according to claim 23, wherein the patterned film is provided with thin bridges across said slots for maintaining slot spacing.
- 28. The method of claim 14, wherein said release substrate is a continuous moving belt disposed about a rotationally driven roll and a second roll.
- 29. The method of claim 28, wherein said dielectric glass frit containing composition is deposited onto said belt and formed into a layer of desired thickness by passage through an opening of defined dimensions prior to contacting the top surface of the rib structures.
