Claims
- 1. A method of making a vascular prosthesis comprising:forming a tube of ePTFE, said tube having a first radius; dilating said tube by repeatedly stretching said tube radially in small increments; and sintering said dilated tube.
- 2. The method of claim 1 further comprising dilating said tube by inserting stretching mandrels of increasing outer diameters into said tube.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein said stretching is performed by inserting stretching members into said tube, said stretching members having a surface with longitudinal microgrooves extending in a longitudinal direction.
- 4. The method of claim 3 further comprising heating said mandrels prior to insertion.
- 5. A method of making a vascular prosthesis comprising:forming two tubes of ePTFE; dilating each tube by expanding each tube incrementally several times until a predetermined inner diameter for each tube is achieved; superimposing one of said tubes over the other so that said tubes are nested; sintering said tubes to form a laminated tubular member.
- 6. The method of claim 5 further comprising heating said tubes during said dilating.
- 7. The method of claim 6 wherein said tubes are heated to about 50° C.
- 8. The method of claim 6 further comprising preheating said tubes prior to said sintering to cause said tubes to adhere to each other.
- 9. The method of claim 5 further comprising securing the ends of said tubes prior to said sintering.
- 10. The method of claim 5 wherein said step of expanding includes inserting a mandrel into said tubes, said mandrel having a diameter larger than an inner diameter of said tubes.
- 11. The method of claim 5 wherein said step of dilating said tubes includes inserting sequentially into said tubes a plurality of mandrels of increasing diameters.
- 12. The method of claim 11 wherein said mandrels having outer surfaces provided with longitudinal microgrooves.
- 13. The method of claim 5 further comprising providing an intermediate member between said first and second tubes prior to said sintering.
- 14. The method of claim 5 further comprising providing an extruded intermediate tube between said two tubes.
- 15. The method of claim 5 further comprising providing an intermediate layer between said tubes, said intermediate layer consisting of a PTFE tape wound on one of said tubes.
- 16. The method of claim 5 further comprising providing a stent coupled to said tubes.
- 17. The method of claim 5 further comprising providing a metallic stent between said tubes prior to sintering said tubes.
- 18. The method of claim 5 further comprising providing a metal stent having predetermined a stent diameter larger than a tube diameter of one of said tubes.
- 19. The method of claim 18 further comprising tensioning said stent radially inwardly to reduce its diameter to said tube diameter.
- 20. The method of claim 5 further comprising passing said laminated tubular member through a press nip to reduce its thickness.
