Claims
- 49. A process of making glyphosate, a salt thereof, or a glyphosate precursor compound, comprising:
contacting a hydroxymethylphosphonic acid with an oxidant in the presence of a catalyst to produce a formylphosphonic acid; and contacting the formylphosphonic acid with a reactant selected from the group consisting of ammonia, glycine, ethanolamine, and salts thereof to form a condensation product.
- 50. The process of claim 49, wherein the reactant is glycine or a salt thereof, and the condensation product is hydrogenated to form glyphosate or a salt thereof.
- 51. The process of claim 49, wherein the reactant is ammonia or a salt thereof, and the condensation product is hydrogenated to form aminomethylphosphonic acid or a salt thereof.
- 52. The process of claim 51, wherein the aminomethylphosphonic acid or a salt thereof is carboxymethylated to form glyphosate or a salt thereof.
- 53. The process of claim 49, wherein the reactant is ethanolamine or a salt thereof, and the condensation product is hydrogenated to form hydroxyethylaminomethylphosphonic acid or a salt thereof.
- 54. The process of claim 53, wherein the hydroxyethylaminomethylphosphonic acid or a salt thereof is oxidized to form glyphosate or a salt thereof.
- 55. The process of claim 50, further comprising admixing the glyphosate or one or more salts thereof with one or more additives to produce a herbicidal formulation.
- 56. The process of claim 52, further comprising admixing the glyphosate or one or more salts thereof with one or more additives to produce a herbicidal formulation.
- 57. The process of claim 54, further comprising admixing the glyphosate or one or more salts thereof with one or more additives to produce a herbicidal formulation.
- 58. The process of claim 49, wherein the hydroxymethylphosphonic acid is obtained by reacting formaldehyde with phosphorous acid.
- 59. The process of claim 49, wherein the oxidant is O2 or H2O2.
- 60. The process of claim 59, wherein the oxidant is a substantially pure oxygen gas.
- 61. The process of claim 59, wherein the oxidant is an oxygen gas mixed with a carrier gas.
- 62. The process of claim 61, wherein the oxidant is air.
- 63. The process of claim 49, wherein the catalyst is homogeneous.
- 64. The process of claim 49, wherein the catalyst is heterogeneous.
- 65. The process of claim 64, wherein the catalyst is supported.
- 66. The process of claim 49, wherein the catalyst is an iron-containing compound.
- 67. The process of claim 66, wherein the catalyst is ferrous sulfate.
- 68. The process of claim 49, wherein the catalyst is a copper-containing compound.
- 69. The process of claim 68, wherein the catalyst is metallic copper.
- 70. The process of claim 68, wherein the catalyst is sponge copper.
- 71. The process of claim 68, wherein the catalyst is Mo-doped copper.

- 73. The process of claim 49, wherein the process is conducted in an aqueous solution.
- 74. The process of claim 49, wherein the process is conducted in a non-aqueous solution.
- 75. The process of claim 49, wherein the process is conducted in the presence of an acid.
- 76. The process of claim 49, wherein the process is conducted in the presence of a base.
- 77. The process of claim 75, wherein the resulting mixture has a pH of less that about 7.
- 78. The process of claim 75, wherein the resulting mixture has a pH of less that about 5.
- 79. The process of claim 75, wherein the resulting mixture has a pH of less that about 2.
- 80. The process of claim 75, wherein the resulting mixture has a pH of less that about 1.
- 81. The process of claim 49, wherein the process is conducted at a temperature of less than about 200° C.
- 82. The process of claim 49, wherein the process is conducted at a temperature of less than about 150° C.
- 83. The process of claim 49, wherein the process is conducted at a temperature of less than about 100° C.
