Claims
- 1. The method of mechanically interlocking a bell having a substantially uniform internal diameter over a major portion of the axial length thereof and a pin having a substantially uniform external diameter greater than said internal diameter of said bell in an interference fit pipe joint comprising the steps of:
- (a) forcing the end of said pin axially into said bell, whereby said bell is progressively expanded radially as the end of said pin is inserted thereinto; and
- (b) deforming the mouth of said bell radially inwardly sufficiently to form an annular groove in said pin corresponding to the mouth of the bell and lock the mouth of the bell within said groove.
- 2. The method set forth in claim 1 wherein the mouth of said bell is deformed by forcing a ring having tapered internal dimensions axially over the mouth of said bell.
- 3. The method of forming a pipe joint coupling a first pipe section and a second pipe section to form a conduit comprising the steps of:
- (a) enlarging one end of said second pipe section to form a bell therein, the bell having a substantially uniform internal diameter over a major portion of the axial length thereof which is less than the external diameter of the end of said first pipe section;
- (b) sizing the end of said first pipe section to have substantially uniform diameter external walls with an external diameter greater than the internal diameter of said major portion of the axial length of said bell;
- (c) forcing the end of said first pipe section within said bell until the end of said first pipe section reaches the inner end of said bell, whereby said bell is progressively expanded radially as the end of said first pipe section is inserted therein; and
- (d) deforming the mouth of said bell radially inwardly sufficiently to form a groove in said first pipe section with the end of said bell deformed into said groove.
- 4. The method set forth in claim 3 wherein said mouth of said second pipe section is radially depressed by forcing a collar having tapered internal dimensions axially over the mouth of said second pipe section.
- 5. The method set forth in claim 4 wherein said collar is axially forced over the mouth of said second pipe section at the end of the insertion stroke whereby said first pipe section is inserted into said second pipe section.
- 6. The method set forth in claim 3 wherein opposing sections of a circular collar are radially pressed against the mouth of said second pipe section to press the mouth of said second pipe section into said first pipe section.
- 7. The method set forth in claim 3 wherein said portion of said second pipe section is radially depressed by rollers travelling circumferentially around said second pipe section and simultaneously deforming said portion radially inwardly.
- 8. The method set forth in claim 3 including the step of sizing the end of said first pipe section to the desired dimensions before assembling the joint by forcing a sizing ring over the end of said first pipe section.
