Claims
- 1. A process for preparing a supported, self-promoted catalyst, said process comprising:
- (i) compositing a porous, inorganic refractory oxide support with a water soluble catalyst precursor salt characterized by (ML) (Mo.sub.y W.sub.1-y O.sub.4) wherein M comprises one or more divalent promoter metals selected from the group consisting of Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and mixtures thereof, wherein y is any value ranging from 0 to 1, and wherein L is one or more neutral, nitrogen-containing ligands at least one of which is a chelating polydentate ligand; and
- (ii) heating said composite formed in (i) in a non-oxidizing atmosphere in the presence of excess sulfur in the form of one or more sulfur bearing compounds and at a temperature of at least about 200.degree. C. to form said self-promoted catalyst.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein said promoter metal M comprises at least one metal selected from the group consisting of (a) Fe, Co, Ni and mixtures thereof and (b) mixtures of (a) with Zn, Cu, Mn and mixtures thereof.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein L has a total denticity of six and is one or more chelating, polydentate alkyl amines.
- 4. The process of claim 3 wherein said sulfur bearing compound comprises H.sub.2 S.
- 5. The process of either of claims 3 or 4 wherein said support comprises alumina.
- 6. The process of either of claims 1 or 2 wherein said support comprises chromium oxide.
- 7. The process of claim 6 wherein said chromium oxide support is supported on a refractory, inorganic oxide support material.
