Claims
- 1. A method for making radial lip shaft seals having a generally cylindrical reinforcing outer case to which has been bonded an elastomeric body that includes a flexible seal lip portion comprising the steps of, selecting a rigid strip of indeterminate length, feeding said strip continuously through a series of punch press forming operations in a progressive type die to perform the steps of: scoring the strip rearwards of the body edge to establish the width of a rectangular case blank at a first station, the first advance of said case blank to a second die station and trim step establishing the length of said rectangular case blank, a second advance of said rectangular case blank to a third die station where the first form operation starts the bending of said case blank along its major axis with some separation of said score at both edges,
- advancing said case blank to a fourth die station with the second form operation increasing the bend of the previous operation forming a "U" and greatly increasing the separation along the score from the edges toward the middle,
- advancing said case blank to a fifth die station with the third forming operation closing the "U" of the previous operation and forming the generally cylindrical shape of a finished reinforcing outer case,
- placing said finished case in the heated cavity of a mold in a molding press with a quantity of uncured elastomer and bonding said elastomer to said finished case forming said elastomeric body and said flexible lip seal portion.
- 2. The method of making radial lip shaft seals in claim 1 where said rigid strip of indeterminate length is sheet metal.
- 3. The method of making radial lip shaft seals in claim 1 in which the second progressive die station has been modified forming at least one male clinch at one end of said rectangular case blank and at least one corresponding female clinch at the other end of said rectangular case blank said male and female clinches being coined together at the fifth progressive die station.
- 4. The method of making radial lip shaft seals in claim 1 in which the second progressive die station has been modified to form half triangle notches at the ends of said rectangular case blank with bases extending along said score and an extra piercing station added between said second trim station and said third or form station to form at least two triangular cut-out portions the bases of which extend along said score intermediate and substantially equally spaced between the said half triangle notches and after said complete separation at said score, shaping said case blank over a preform punch by a preform die displacing the segments between the triangular notches of said case blank radially inward to an angle of approximately 45.degree. with the axis of said case blank and shaping over a finish form punch by a finish form die increasing the displacement of said segments to an angle of approximately 90.degree. with the axis forming an internal flange of a finished case.
- 5. The method of making radial lip shaft seals of claim 4 in which slits of length equal to the height of said triangles and replacing said triangles so that preform and finish form operations produce displacements radially outward of the formed segments resulting in external flanges on the finished cases.
