Claims
- 1. A method of manufacturing an injection molded object having an opaque outer shell with a front face and a light transmitting assembly molded into said opaque outer shell and at least partially visible from said front face, said method including the steps of:
- supporting a light transmitting assembly having front and rear faces on a mold tool which is positioned to be closable with a complementary mold tool upon movement of said mold tools towards each other, said complementary mold tool having an interior wall which defines said front face of said opaque outer shell,
- forming passages through said light transmitting assembly to extend between said front and rear faces thereof,
- bringing said mold tools together to close said mold and to position said front face of said light transmitting assembly adjacent said interior wall of said complementary mold tool,
- injecting a molten plastic into said closed mold to form said opaque outer shell of said object while also flowing said molten plastic through said passages in said light transmitting assembly to form a layer of opaque plastic on said front face of said light transmitting assembly around said passages, and separating at least a portion of said injected opaque plastic filling said passages of said light transmitting assembly upon separation of said mold tools to reduce the amount of opaque plastic available to obstruct the passage of light through said light transmitting assembly.
- 2. The method of claim 1 including the step of forming an icon on said front face of said light transmitting assembly and the step of forming a recess around the periphery of said icon when said mold tools are brought together to close said mold.
- 3. The method of claim 1 including the step of ejecting said portion of said separated injected plastic filling said narrow passages from said mold tool upon separation of said mold tools.
- 4. The method of claim 1 in which said light transmitting assembly includes a core having said front face and an anvil having said rear face with an icon formed on said front face.
- 5. A method of manufacturing a composite object having an opaque outer shell with a front face and an interior light transmitting element having a front face and a rear face which light transmitting element is at least partially visible from said front face of the outer shell, including the steps of:
- forming passages through said light transmitting assembly to provide communication between its front and rear faces,
- injection molding an opaque plastic around said light transmitting assembly to form said outer shell while also flowing said opaque plastic through said passages to fill said passages and to flow opaque plastic over portions of said front face of said light transmitting assembly while also forming a sprue runner across said rear face of said light transmitting assembly to supply molten plastic to said passages,
- separating said sprue runner and at least a portion of said opaque plastic filling said passages from said opaque plastic flowed over portions of said front face of said light transmitting assembly, and ejecting said separated sprue runner and said separated portion of said opaque plastic filling said passages from said outer shell to reduce the obstruction to the passage of light through said light transmitting assembly.
- 6. A method of manufacturing a composite article including the steps of:
- forming a core having a front face and a rear face with a portion of said front face defining an icon,
- forming an anvil having a supporting surface in the shape of said portion of said core forming said icon and dimensioned to seat on said rear face of said core in supporting engagement with said portion of said core defining said icon, and
- forming a front face of said composite article by injection molding a plastic layer over said front face of said core except for at least a substantial area of said portion of said front face defining said icon.
- 7. The method of claim 6 in said step of forming a front face of said composite article includes the step of seating a tool against said front face of said core to obturate said portion of front face of said core defining said icon except for a narrow border therearound.
- 8. The method of claim 2 including the step of connecting said passages and said recess around the periphery of said icon when bringing said mold tools together to close said mold.
- 9. The method of claim 5 in which said step of forming a sprue runner across said rear face of said light transmitting assembly includes the step of forming a sloped wall on said sprue runner which is engageable by a mold tool to assist in ejecting said separated sprue runner and said portion of said plastic filling said passages from said outer shell.
